When underway through an uninhabited mountain valley in the southern Alps (National Park Alpi Marittime, 42 kms / 30 mls North of Nice) I noticed this bird (altitude 1600 m / 5250 ft, terrain: grass, low vegetation and boulders).
At first, in the field, I assumed an Alpine Accentor. But its short tail (relative to the length of its folded wings), and the scaled blackish flanks (instead of streaked orange/brown) suggest otherwise.
When looking at the images later I thought of a Black Redstart, but again the tail (relative to its wings) seems to be much too short and perhaps its back and wings are too well marked. Also the bird didn't twitch its tail at all, and was perched for a long time on a large boulder, seemingly at ease looking around (not as restless as many Redstarts).
Still, Redstart seems the most likely to me. But is that correct?
