Going for Gold
Great to see more brilliant notebook sketches, Phil. Mike's spot on with the Dix Pip asessment - top notch observational powers at work here. For me, the scoters are even better - but then for me the bigger they are the easier they're to see!
I love this style very much - what pleaure it must be to look at every one of 'em.

I hope there's loads more where these came from.

that's brilliant Phil- its such a shame that so many county bird reports these days (with honourable exceptions) are all peppered with fine but boring DSLR shots when they used to be sparkling with these little lovelies

Have to agree with Ed here, and Russ below, and Colleen above! These really are striking sketches, and I hope you have loads more of them. And thanks for the lesson in how you did them. Always interesting to learn things like this. As Russ said you must be happy being able to view them.

Very touched by your comments!

Yes, there are loads. I hope to create more.

Here's my first Wryneck in the early 90s. Since then I have been blessed with loads.

A difficult bird to capture. Very. So cryptic.

In The Ukraine my friends were upset that I wouldn't get out of bed to see the "new singing arrivals".

I was "Wrynecked -Out" by then!

We've had a surprising number recently hereabouts. A rare bird in UK!

One recent tired bird in Somerset, England was dispatched by a Stoat.

I hope all the Ants it ate made it taste strongly of Formic Acid! :cat:

A strange painting in due course...?!!

I look forward to that....:cat:

A Red-Necked Phalarope continually harassing a Eurasian Teal was the strange "painting" I envisaged. I hope it evolves. The Teal was being followed constantly for its prowess in disturbing stuff from the shallows. After 10 minutes the Teal was no longer bothered.

It did seem oppressive for a while! The Phalarope even pecked its rear end to make it move on and stir up the goods! :cat:

Firstly....i agree with Ed on the letraset artwork...utterly charming...!

Secondly......i have seen wilsons phalarope doing the same thing following a quacker for disturbed food.....amazing to watch...!

Thirdly......wrynecks rock.....[back and forth with their heads]...i need to see one soon....:cat:

Glad it's not just me who witnessed "Phalarope Duck Bothering" User!
Had to show something for this experience. So here's a sketchy little untidy piece I call "My Little 'Friend'..." (As in, whether I want one or not!)
Just for the record!
Not a great piece. But I wanted to show the Teal's consternation that she couldn't shake off her pursuer. And yes, that's kind of how it was!
Teal are tiny, so Red-Necked Phalaropes must be really tiny!:eek!:

The last RNPhal I'd seen was 16 years ago. They are rare in this part of UK.
That individual could be approached down to a few feet. A fisherman came up to us at the time and asked this bizarre qustion,
" I was standing out there in the water, and I just had a little bird with a pointed beak swim straight through my legs! Do any of you know what it was?!"
He seemed very agitated!;)
Not only ducks get bothered it seems!
The audacity of it all!:cat:
Got to be up there in my Top 10!

I attach that bird in sketches from the previous incident also.

Hope everyone had a good weekend!B :)

Wonderful experience convincingly put on paper! I've yet to see a Phalarope but when I do I'll be a bit more prepared. It's one thing to read that they're small but it's another to read about them and then see an accompanying illustration. I think that this like your older work is something that will continue to grow on you over time.
