One of my friends sighted this odd looking Tufted Duck with a Scaup-like head and greyish mottling. To confirm, is this a hybrid?

I agree with Butty.
There seems to be as much black at the bill tip as in Tufted duck - and the greyish-looking back could be due to light conditions . so more photos needed for ID
