Spring All-Day Birdwatch

A date for your diaries; this year the annual institution that is the Spring All-Day Birdwatch will on Saturday 3rd May. More details closer to the time; this year we hope to be joined by Belvide, Middleton Lakes, Marsh Lane and Venus Pool (plus any other Midlands sites that wish to participate).

We are so lucky to regularly see the water rails and little grebes at Upton.
Either that or it's great management of the habitat. It is the latter I am sure and all our thanks should regularly be expressed to those guys who carry out this work.

Thanks Alan.
There were 57 Individuals on the work parties this season (Sep (2103) to Mar (2014)
24 at the Moors
33 at the Flashes
with 3 on both, but modesty forbids me mentioning them.

The amount of tasks carried out has increased dramatically, purely as a result of the dedication and numbers of people involved. What is also reassuring, is that many people come up with ideas that we hadn't thought about. A real team effort and long may it continue.B :)B :) John

Tufted Duck

After such as successful breeding season in 2013, it is not totally unexpected that Tufted Duck numbers are well up this year. Attached is chart comparing the maximum half-monthly counts so far this year against the average of the 16 years between 1998 and 2003. Indeed four of the five half-monthly maximums so far this year have been the highest on record (the exception being the second half of February which noted 50 birds compared to 51 in 2012).

Tufted Duck again

Tufted Duck is one of the species that is doing increasingly well at Upton Warren, both in terms of breeding success and overall numbers. Reasons could include the management of the mink situation and the increase in the Black-headed Gull colony which at least some of the Tufties appear to breed within. Although its only a limited sample, please below a comparison of the average half-monthly maxima between 1998 to 2005 (blue line) and 2006 to 2013 (red line):

a 1st winter/summer BHG:t: John

were the Little grebes in front of the east hide. It could be that there are 6 on the Moors , assuming the pair are still on the Broadmeadow pool.
