Stayed on the Flashes until 3pm. The sluice was removed and 2cm dropped in the 9 hours or so that I was there. I partially closed it at 0.49 level.
The brief staying Bar Tailed Godwit, wasn't chased by any other bird and just left on its own accord. This bird was mostly a winter plumaged bird, with feint chestnut blotching on its underparts and an orange basal half of its bill. Not sure if this was the Grimley bird.

Common Gull ??

Taken on Monday 21st at Moors from East Hide. I think this fits the bill as a common gull - beak colouring, size, wing markings etc. Legs are pale. Ist winter common? Could someone confirm please? If not one -why not ?|:S| One was noted as being present on that day.
Thanks
Phil E

Avocet losses

Yesterday morning I arrived early to check for migrants but also to monitor the nesting birds. Something wasn't right with the Avocets. The reason was obvious. 5 nests had all been abandoned. This is extremely worrying especially as one of the clutches was due to hatch this weekend. Without elaborating too much, I seriously think that the losses were not from a natural source. We will be taking steps to limit future incursions and the relevant bodies will be notified. Please bare with us and understand that for obvious reasons we will be more vigilant in the next few weeks. Please assist us, (if you are not known by the wardens) by carrying your permit/ membership cards and show them when asked.:C

Pair of Teal today in Amy's early afternoon. Otherwise not much to add to Phil's summary - singing Sedge Warblers on east side of Moors, top end of North Moors (plus two singing Song Thrushes) and one along Flashes path just past feeding station hide. Many Reed Warblers in all main reed-beds.

Gadwall were moving between both sides of the reserve - counts early afternoon were 4 Moors and 6 Flashes, but I think it was only seven birds in total.

Common Terns doing the same - five early afternoon on Moors and one on Flashes.

Black Terns saved the day from mediocrity :king:
