Yes your not wrong there stuart and another good bird after we left but I will let Dave or any of the lads who sapost. Suffice to say that I arrived as it was flying away.:-CJohn

great pics again by the way. That pic with the outstretched neck makes it more like a ruff, good to see the one with the snipe for comparison. I think you had one with a common sand as well?

Have now posted the image of the Pec and Common Sand John.

The Skua arrived after I had left but can't complain, had two good birds in two days!

Managed to get down after work and managed to see the Pec Sand. A lifer for me and a cracking new bird, sounds like a brilliant day at Upton today here's hoping the Sandpiper sticks around for all at the weekend!

Nice one Tim
just like you predicted last week!

Re Bonxies there were record numbers on the north Norfolk coast today over 600
I am surprised there weren't more seen in the Midlands.
But ours could be due to the amount of coverage at Upton today, from 1st light until dark...it just goes to show birds attract birders which in turn find the birds easy really. Why can't we do it all day everyday.

My incredible run of luck continues. My boss left early today, allowing me to sneak out 10 minutes 'before the bell'. The traffic was snarled up around Powick island leading up to the motorway so I decided to go via Holt Fleet and Ombersley - this persuaded me it wasn't worth me bothering going home to get my scope (I had my bins in my car boot oweing to the Lapland Buntings on North Hill earlier in the week). As I made my way past the Chateau Impney, I received a call from Roger Hill saying a Great Skua had dropped in on the first flash - I was literally 5 minutes away but wasn't hopeful I was going to make it. I ran down to the flashes finding a fairly calm hide. Thinking I'd missed it - when Dave Jackson said it was walking along the channel alongside the sewage meadow, I thought he was referring to the Pec. I couldn't believe it when I raised my bins and saw a big brown Bonxie. Amazing!!! The bird then got up and flew around before heading off to the south. I can't believe how jammy I'd been.

The Pectoral Sand was almost an afterthought as the bonxie is the first for around 40 years. Together they take my year list to 135. Happy Days!!

Soon after the Skua left a Hobby drifted over the orchard by Sagebury Farm.

Many thanks to Rog Hill for the call. Bob Hart kindly said he'll send me photos - I'll post them up when he does.

Inland Skua!- does it get any better?

Great account Dave. I can now add my tail of woe. Had gone home after the pec. All set to creep around the Mrs to sweeten her for the next two days at upton. Then I received a call from Neil D to say he had just accidentally flushed a Skua off the sailing pool next to the path and it was heading to the Flashes. I tried phoning Rob P and Terry H whom I thought were at the Flashes to let them know. Unfortunately both were engaged so I assumed they were phoning about it. Anyway a minute later Roger H phoned me to say a bonxie on the 1st Flash!!!:eek!:. I grabbed my bins and had to tell the Mrs (Sue) that I was off just as the tea landed on the table oops (there goes my creeping till later). A mad dash at up to 90mph along the road works section well for a bit anyway. I texted Brian on the way to alert everyone. Arrived in the car park 14 minutes later to see the Gulls scattered all over the place in sheer panic. I ran to the hide phoning on the way to be told it was just flying south unfortunately I was approaching from the north so had no chance of it flying overhead:-C. . Oh well still a good bird for the reserve and the lucky lads that saw it, the next one is due when I will be 95 8-P

Re Pectoral sandpiper
A bird was flushed from Rudyard lake Staffs at 10.45am today. Which could well be our bird with a strong northerly wind helping it on its way.

It's only Rock and Roller but I like it
Several inland Arctic Skuas reported today (eg 3 at Grafham Water) but the only Great Skua record I can find is at Upton.

In Cambridgeshire, just south of The Wash, 3 Poms flew inland, plus 42 Bonxies, 5 Arctics and a Gannet. Also Manxie picked up in Worcs today.

Maybe a few more waifs and strays to be discovered this weekend........

You mean this forum John? Turns out i joined years ago and never used it! Currently my Bonxie pics are on S*rfb*rds (GB & I Scarce), http://www.surfbirds.com/cgi-bin/gallery/display.cgi?gallery=gallery12
I would / will post on here when I work out how to do it. The photo on the deck clearly shows the rich tawny brown colouration indicative of a juv, with the covert fringes less obvious. Lacking the dark cap and off white streaking of an adult as well of course.
Wont go on about the colour of its eyes coz that would be stooping to the levels of grip employed by Mammouth ;)
Cheers, Dave.

PS u were right it is Fulham away (another 3 points in the bin)

I arrived at the Sailing at 12.15ish to be greeted by Jason K, Tony S and Andy (spoonbill finder) telling me all about the Marsh harrier and how it was flushed by the farmer and how sorry they were that it had gone :-C...yes right.
Anyway I continued on my merry way unloading the cobbles etc for Sunday's work party. I heard that Rob P was in the hide so I knew if the Harrier reappears he would text Brian.
After half an hour I arrived at the hide to be instantly told in a pretty cool manner by:king: Rob that a PEC had just literally dropped in as I walked up the stairs:eek!:
We have now reserved the end seat for Rob as everytime he goes to the mecca he finds something;)
After getting some great close views and even attempting to get some pics of my own, my thoughts switched to the earlier meeting with the three amigo's who had by now all gone home.
Oh how I cried for them 8-P.
It was a great pleasure to see them an hour later panting up the stairs to the hide ...just a pity it stayed (only joking lads:smoke:)
And the moral of the story is he who laughs last laughs longest or is it loudest::-O:-O...Dont mess with the boys8-P
Oh yeh and the other moral of the story is everytime Rob P goes I will follow

Haha...Yes John...you got your revenge ;) a lesson learned indeed!

What a great day it was for Upton though Marsh Harrier, Pect Sand and a Bonksey.

Things are still moving about, I had a fly through fem/im. Hen Harrier at Shenstone today, so with a bit of luck there will be a few more good birds to come in Worcs and at Upton this autumn.
