Hi All. Went on a trip to Frampton marshes last week and amongst all the goodies there i spotted a sand martin bank. spoke to the head honcho who said that they had put it in last year and this year had 36 pairs nest in it. He also pointed out the little wings you can see just below the roof sticking out. Apparently these are in place because of the damage done last year by stoats. i have enclosed a pic of bank for those interested.

Thanks for that Dennis
We have looked at this design poss beyond our budget.
Maybe for the future:t:

Very interesting construction and great success figures. I'm sure the SMB Team will be fascinated and I think I can make out the wings to which you refer.
Not sure about the colour balance though, I've had to adjust my monitor to some pretty low levels to be able to view it!

thanks Simon!
i had meant to put in loads of the usual photographic excuses but yes i hold my hands up to it being the worst pic i have taken in a long time. however it is the only one i took so had to run with it. ;) See if i can do better at the moors Friday morning. Dennis

Upton today

No Arctic Skua alas (one flew through Westwood Pool this morning) but a notable movement of some species today - 6 Gadwall and 14 Wigeon at the Moors Pool. Also 3 Pochard, 6 Tufted D, a Common Sand, 2 Dunlin, 39 Lapwing, 180 Coot, 12 Teal, 14 Cormorant, 7 GC Grebe, 5 Little Grebe and 18 Snipe. The Bittern was also reported earlier.

At the Flashes the Pec Sand was still present but very elusive in amongst the reedbed opposite the hide. There were also 2 Green Sand, 20 Curlew, a Redshank, 3 more Dunlin, 2 Little Grebe, another Common Sand, 15+ Snipe and 26 Moorhen (on top of the 14 at the Moors).

Summer migrants were very thin on the ground - I saw just one House Martin over the Sailing Pool whilst a late Sedge Warbler was in the first Flash reedbed.

Good point John. I was at UW for close on 11 hours on Friday, having originally planned to spend 4 to 5 hours there. But when you get Marsh Harrier, Pec and Bonxie on the same day - to get!"

. There's a fine little community of birders at UW and perhaps we should communicate more so that we ensure that the reserve is covered throughout more daylight hours than it is at present.

I!:t:
Like You mentioned Andy :t:I am now off for the early afternoon shift on the Flashes. Dave W (aka Woodchat) is already covering it and the Moors.

Today's sightings

Much quieter today at Upton with all the Dunlin clearing out over-night and also most of the yesterday's Gadwall and Wigeon.

2 Common Sand, 2 Green Sand, 1 Curlew, 10+ Snipe and a Redshank were at the Flashes, along with 258 Lapwing. The Pec Sand was absent for most of the day but suddenly appeared on the mud on 4:30pm, only to promptly disappear again! A Reed Warbler was reported at the Hen Pool with a Sedge Warbler at the Flashes itself. A Peregrine was on the masts whilst a Buzard sat in the ploughed field with prey.

At the Moors there were 3 Wigeon this morning (only 2 this afternoon), a female Gadwall, 1 Pochard, 19 Cormorant, 5 GC Grebe, 5 Little Grebe, 10 Tufted Duck and a Common Sand.

Hi Phil
not cleared out ...it was just a bit of Vis Mig action yesterday:t:

Prior to Phil's visit to the Flashes
There were a couple of adult water rail strengthening my opinion that there has been a recent influx considering no adults have been seen for months, this coincides with the recent arrival of good numbers of snipe possibly from the same areas of Europe today I saw 17 and apparently there were at least 20 at the moors as well. Meadow pipits (c20) were on the move or were more likely locally feeding birds that hang around for a few days before continuing there migration.
75 Teal and 31 Shoveler fed in the pools while a Peregrine plucked a woodpigeon it had just killed on the north field.
a small southerly movement of swallows (6) passed a foraging sedge warbler in the reeds a late date for this species.

Just having a play with photostitch! Other occupants of hide meant I could not go further left but I'll try again sometime, need to do Flashes next. - not sure how this will display - the original file size is huge!

Guess I met Upstarts1979 at the flashes last week and said I'd volunteer last week - unfortunately circumstances conspired against me then, sorry, and I'm committed to another reserve's work party this weekend - but I really hope to get along soon!

Re your photo I have always tried to get a wide panoramic view of the Flashes but could only do it by joining photos together.
Be good if you get one though

The rain seems to have subsided here in Worcester for the time being|=)| so I think I'll put on the waterproofs and make my way out to UW. First port of call is likely to be the Flashes.

As I write it's just started raining again:C. Oh well, I've made my mind up now and I'm on my way out there!:t:

You did introduce yourself as 'John', I was with my wife, previously with my brother-in-law. But glad you can't remember, it makes my 'no-show' less embarrassing!

These are only joined but joined by photoshop. I will try the Flashes next when the hide is quiet.

Sorry Roger I do remember you and your wife, I don't think you said you would be at the work party anyway so no need for apologies. I seem to remember you go on other conservation work parties but we have quite a few over the next 6 months so I am sure you will make one:t:

WORK PARTY THIS SUNDAY 3RD OCTOBER
Just looked at weather and it looks good for the morning at least. I will be there for a prompt start and get a few hours in and then do some birding later. Also we will check out for jack snipe in their normal area at the flashes.

Hi John. I saw the Pec again - in its favourite place on the beach in front of the gates to the sewage farm - but the Wilsons didn't show up|=(| (maybe tomorrow;)). Rob P and Terry N were in the hide when I turned up - the same pair who I viewed the Marsh Harrier with last Friday - so the omens looked good;). Unfortunately not even these 2 redoudtable fellows could bring anything unusual down this time|=(|. 2 Common Sands, 1 Green Sand, 1Dunlin and 10+ Snipe were the only other waders present at the Flashes. Over at the Moors I saw 7 Gadwall - 6 of which were male - and 5 Wigeon. I've never seen so many Gadwall together at UW before|8.|!

Off to watch Worcester City play at Telford tomorrow. Not too hopeful of getting anything there:-C, but I'm sure I'll enjoy the Salopian real ales on offer in the Cock Hotel near the ground before the game! B :)B :)B :)

Nice account Andy
you've probably got more chance than we (the Blues) have of beating everton, If we don't loose then we break our record for being unbeaten at home for over a year. 19 matches
