Upton Warren (1 Viewer)

I found another Black-headed Gull sporting a yellow leg ring with black code TR0V at the Flashes this morning. There doesn't appear to be a record of this bird being seen at Upton Warren before. I think it was a first winter.

TR0V was ringed as a nestling on the 7th July 2019 at Nadarzyn in Poland (approx 5 miles outside of Warsaw city centre). There has been no other sightings of this bird.

Dean Reeves further reported from the reserve:

12 Avocets, 13 Curlew, Green Wood & Kestrel at the Flashes.

Jack Snipe, 19 Snipe & male Peregrine at the Moors Pool.

Glaucous Gull

Managed to get to UW for the Glauc. It was getting a tad dark when the bird finally graced the waiting onlookers with its presence. May try again over the weekend. Still nice to get an Upton tick.:t:

Tuesday's Iceland Gull was the eighth record for the reserve and the third in six years. Details of sightings as follows:

1st March 1970
9th November 1980 - adult in flight
31st December 1991 - first winter at the Moors Pool
19th December 1992 - immature (probably first winter) in flight
26th December 1994 - immature (probably first winter) in flight
25th February 2014 - first winter at the Moors Pool before flying north
21st February 2016 - adult flew south over the Flashes early morning
23rd February 2020 - first winter briefly at the Flashes early morning before flying south

The clustering of dates for the three most recent records is quite striking.

In addition there have been several records of "white-winged" gulls (typically in flight) that haven't been safely identified as either Iceland or Glaucous.

I suspect that despite four times as many sightings, more observers have now seen Glaucous Gull on the reserve than Iceland Gull.

Glaucous Gull relocated to fields at Upton Snodsbury as per Francis Peplow where it was feeding voraciously on earthworms (probably why the bill often looks so dark when it arrives in the evening)

A38 near Chichester Caravans at 6.05am.
On the way to the flashes, for the beast, there was a Barn Owl hunting the hedgerow east side of A38.
Was this the same bird later seen at the Flashes.

February ends on a total of 86 species (just above the monthly average of 85.13 species) and the year list promoted to 90.

March will hopefully see a change in the weather into something a tad warner and less wet / windy - potential additions to the year list in the next month include:

Mandarin, Goldeneye, Osprey, Marsh Harrier, Merlin, Little Ringed Plover, Ringed Plover, Dunlin, Redshank, Black-tailed Godwit, Common Sandpiper, Meadow Pipit, Sand Martin, Swallow, House Martin, Wheatear, Blackcap, Siskin, Yellowhammer

As Phil mentioned earlier the Glauc was at Upton Snodsbury before it returned to roost at UW. Definitely eating earthworm and resting up.
Much better photographic opportunities this PM.:t:

21L1 is a white ring with black numbers/letters.

Barn Owl also showed this evening and Stuart found a 1st W Med Gull.
