No ringing tomorrow.
Hoping to do a couple of hours in the Flashes hide first thing then I'll saunter back to the car to equip myself with the strimmer (already in the boot).
Can't find my hand warmer anywhere though...

I spent about 75 mins at the Flashes this morning. Ninety five per cent of the surface is frozen.
3 Avocet
4 Oystercatcher (a pair of which were showing promising signs)
34 Curlew
1 Pied Wagtail
1 Green Woodpecker
255 BHG
2 LBBG
45 Lapwing
2 LTTs building in usual spot.
1 Cormorant
1 GCG
1 Dunnock singing for his life!
And I managed to inadvertently flush a Jack Snipe from the confluence of Hen's Brook and the Flashes run-off stream on my way back to the car.
I nipped home because I was without gloves and I'd forgotten my GP lens for the work party snaps.

Just home from a very enjoyable work party.
Lots got done, lots of laughs and lots of banter.
I've had time to process three shots - now I'm off to the pub via the shower!

Nice one Simon - second that one! Great pictures , especially of my son struggling to get into the waders! That will give him something to talk about at school!
On my second Ubu and loosing the ability to type....

Work party 7th March

Hi All
that was the best work party in 25 years since it all started.
like simon said good banter ...and achieved all our 'goals' and more
a superb effort by all 21 of us. Everyone should feel proud today

Today prooved that all sorts of people join the work party from photographers, birders of all levels, wildlife enthusiasts etc. But one thing in common was that everyone of the team cares for Upton...Hopefully dispelling the myth that we are a clique once and for all.

cheers John

3 action photos of the team

Nice one John,

Great day, great weather and really good to see some 'new blood' on the work party. I was especially impressed with how the new guys tackled that blackthorn scrub next to the hide - put mine and Mike's efforts on the last work party to shame!

And don't forget the other highlight of the day - male Stonechat - takes my total to 80.

Long day at Upton spending 10.5 hours there today! Excellent work party as everyone has already said and Gadwall, Avocet and Stonechat take me onto 76 for the year.

Lots more LRP's and Wheatear in the country now so won't be long till they turn up keep your eyes peeled!

Work -completed today

The area in front of the hide was strimmed and mowed shorter than ever before and should be ideal for passage wheatear and yellow wags and breeding species
several small areas were purposely left long for breeding birds
many small islets and 'spits were re-shingled.
A secondary fox fence was installed
several holes in the perimeter fence were repaired where fox and badgers have broken through.
The main shingle island was cleared of un-wanted vegetation
The blackthorn thicket in front of the hide was trimmed to aid viewing and thicken up for breeding species

All of the above coupled with a decrease in the water level of 7cm
(The sluice was fully opened since Friday - now closed)
has created what should be ideal conditions for the early migrant waders and passerines.

Birds seen at the Flashes today 7th March 2010
Jack Snipe 3, Common Snipe 11, Lapwings c100+, Avocet 3, 2 Oystercatchers, Teal 58 (or was it 68 Tim), 21 greylags, 3 Buzzards soaring and displaying above us. Kestrel calling ( rare on the reserve so far this year), Linnets 5, reed Bunting 3 singing, and a male Stonechat.

Moors didn't do a lot of birding there - 2 Fieldfare came into roost in front of feeding area I'm sure one of the lads have got more to add.

Year list now 79 with stonechat

2 More Fieldfares roosted in the 'spindle' thicket opposite the Chestnut tree, along with a few Redwing. Female Kestrel perched in dead trees bordering eastern shore of Moors pool. Four Oystercatchers, pair of Gadwall, Shelduck, several Curlews and Little Grebe Amy's.
