Returning to the subject of the 1st May all-dayer, John.
Would you like a ringing presence on the reserve that day to coincide with the event?

I am sure that would be a bonus can you arrange that with ferg, I am sure the lads would agree with that

I've got nothing to add to the reports from yesterday other than JB has paid me to deny all knowledge of the brief visit to the Flashes by a Ringed Plover yesterday...;)

Here are a couple of pictures from the morning.
There was a hybrid goose in amongst the Canadas on the nearby fields.
This Teal was flushed over to the hide side of the Flashes when the tractor arrived.
A picture of the tractor in action.
The Avocets seemed totally nonplussed about the mowing operation. *
Up to 5 Linnets were seen throughout the morning.

* Question:Of the four Avocets in the picture, would I be correct to assume that (from the left) the first bird is a female and the third one a male? Going by bill curvature.

the hydrid goose was at the moors too on saturday night.....

wasent it here last winter too, i remember seeing it next to the white fronto:D

Hi John.
A few bittern pics from Thursday.

All taken from the moors hide at lunchtime.
Best regards, Mike.

The pictures of this bird get better I think we should be able to Id this individual in the future from these Pics.
Was it to the right of the hide in one of the cleared channels if so it was there yesterday. It is only about 10yards max from the edge of the car park
Nice one Mike (nice to have met you the other week)
cheers John

Hi Dave did you get any pics of the Bittern I know Pete and Bob got some pics yesterday hopefully they will put some on
Cheers John

No didn't try. Pete and Bob showed me their shots yesterday - much better than anything I could achieve with my little snappy camera.

Mike N's got some great shots there too.

When I saw it, the Bittern was at the end of the channel you mention above - showing well but slightly tucked in on the RHS. You needed to be on the left side of the hide to get enough angle to see the whole bird.

Can we count it?! I need every bird I can get at the moment !:-O

With the birds coming in the next few weeks you wont need it I am doing an all-dayer next Saturday its catch up time, Dave is getting too far ahead. Give him a few more bottles of your ale and keep out the way on Saturday (the extra strong ones we were having on the all-dayer). You know the one with the illusionary effect specially brewed for 'stringers' B :) B :) B :) keep drinking em Dave you'll be Ok
also stop press new rule anyone on 80 has to stop for 2 weeks to let others catch up so as not to disillusion them.

Dave Jackson said he had two Nuthatches in the large tree south of the east hide on the moors this morning. If you're down in the week keep an eye on that area.

My biggest handicap is only being able to get down at weekends - unlike your good self and (lately) Gert. Even Wako (AKA Wheatearlp) managed a day off last week!

Wouldn't say no to a few more ales though. B :):t:

Hmmm Stringers Ale - I like the sound of that! Time to buy some more hops methinks:t:

I spent a nice quiet hour on the Flashes this morning.
No particular changes to species numbers to report. Although I must say the sunrise was to behold. You'll have to travel some distance to beat a Flashes sunrise.
Took a few pictures but I don't have software at work that'll handle the 7D's format of RAW image, so I'll have to post them later on, from home.
Noted species were:
4 Avocet
38 Curlew
34 Lapwing
12 Mallard
2 Shellduck
2 Shoveler
1 Wigeon
3 Reed Bunting
2 Heron
1 Pied Wagtail
25 BHG
A Green Woodpecker was yaffling from somewhere in the vicinity of the third Flash.
A Great Spotted Woodpecker drummed from high up in the dead tree behind the feeding station.
A number of Canada Geese were present.
1 Tree Creeper in Willows on Hen's Brook behind the boats.
1 Great Crested Grebe and 1 Cormorant on the Sailing Pool on my way back to the car.

What video editing software do you use (is it free)? I have a few clips from UW when I was trying out the HD Video capability of my Canon 7D.
I could stick 'em together and post them somewhere.
What size are your resultant video files? Are they compressed for uploading?

Sy

The editing software I use is Final Cut for Mac, which isn't free.

You no longer have to compress your videos for YouTube, but they've got to be 2GB or smaller.

and didn't leave the loppers on the post for a month ;)

The two lads were Adam of Upton film making fame and derek from sutton like dave said great effort - hope you didn't get too many thorns in your hands.
cheers john

Ha ha, I like that: "Adam of Upton film making fame".

I didn't noticed all the scratches I had gotten from the blackthorn spikes; on my wrists from lopping, until I was finished.

It looked like I self harmed or like that I was attacked by a Wildcat or something. I think I showed my wrists to Tim?

It was great fun and sort of a good work out too and the weather was lovely.

I have a few pictures somewhere, must get them sorted and put them on here.

Here are a few pictures from this morning's visit. Apart from the GSW shot the pictures are unprocessed. The colours are a true reflection of what was on offer this morning at dawn.
