Today 15 of us moved onto the Flashes . Here we started raking the massive areas cut by Neil around the Flashes.
The wet area in the southern part of the 2nd Flash was where we started.
Even just raking small areas, revealed an excellent wet boggy area, ideal for snipe and a jack snipe that was nearly raked up.
The pictures speak for themselves.

After the wet area , we moved onto the dry grassy area in front of the hide. Neil had just mowed it so it was dry and easier to remove. We piled it up towards the west side of the fox fence.
The last 2 pics show the view from the groundfloor of the hide
anfd the final shot is looking towards the wet area south of the 2nd Flash. It also shows the far end of the 3rd flash periphery, an area not cut for 20 years or more.
we also cut a stretch of phragmites to allow views into the prime snipe habitat.

Thanks to everyone for a great effort today.
Hopefully Paul M will have recovered by next week and we will return to the Moors to finish off the SW marsh project. The results so far have seen waterfowl grazing in the freshly cut areas.

Phil Andrews

It's only Rock and Roller but I like it
B :)Phil I thought you would be pleased with guy's and gal's work today.
Shouldn't you be in bed before the bab wakes up8-P
:t:John

Wheatear-pedantry-lp would probably advise that your punctuation means that the work was carried out by only one guy and one girl - what were the other 13 doing? 8-P

We have already had several great photos of UW birds very kindly donated for the 'picture wall', thanks very much indeed.
Species so far: Osprey (of course!), water rail, sedge warbler, little ringed plover, sparrowhawk, waxwing, kingfisher.
Any out there of avocets + chicks, oystercatcher, little egret, etc etc???
So many photogenic possibilities! It's just a pity we haven't got a bigger wall!!

Thanks again,

John
Here is a request from John at the sailing centre.B :)
speaking to John today, he said that the pictures don't have to be frame filling portraits, so any quirky ones, flight shots etc ,as well as the portraits.

John, For Phil's benefit we should mention the three sand martins that passed over while your back was turned in case this is a last sighting of the year.

Would be the second latest ever sighting of Sand Martin for the reserve Peter, only beaten by two on the 30th October in 1997.

At Moors today, Jack Snipe was on the "lagoon" island, before being disturbed by a Greylag Goose, when it flew to the shingle island where it was chased off by a Lapwing, when it flew to the left-hand island, disappearing in the foliage. A Little Egret flew up and away from the lagoon island. A Common Gull was flying over the Pool, mixed in with several Black-headed Gulls.
Can anyone identify what the duck in the attached photo is trying to eat. Thanks
