Gert, you were not too early. I was with Stuart at the Flashes until 10.00 am complaining that Upton has never been great for Wheatear and decided to go to the Moors. You can guess what happened next. John texts me to tell me of the Wheatear at the Flashes and after I inform Brian of the 2 Little Egrets, he assumed I had already seen/new of the bird.Needless to say when I got to the Flashes it had long gone. Otherwise I managed 5 Upton ticks for the year after my week in Cornwall-LRP,Redshank,Swallow,Chiffchaff and Willow Warbler.

Look like great pictures to me Stuart and also looks like a Greenland version with the amount of Orange on it(extending beyond chest etc) but I'm sure that will kick off a debate. Either way nice to see and gutted it wasn't there when I was in the hide at ridiculous o' clock this morning!

Hi Gert
Greenlands are notoriously difficult. They tend to be bigger more up right and like you say brighter on the breast. They also arrive later, May is a good time.
I read a paper some time ago and some can only be Id'd in the hand.
There is a lot of variation in the nominate race and some scandinavian birds can be bright.

They're not quite like the one on Country File the other week, but have a shuftie...

Sy
In time we could try all sorts. We did make one like one in that article -a vegetated version but it sank after a few years . Its remains can be seen to the left of the west hide in the front of the sluice area ( viewed from the east hide)

Hi All

Links to pics of todays Wheatear at the Flashes. Not the best conditions for taking snaps but as it was my first male Wheatear at Upton Warren I'm not complaining too much!

I can't imagine what the pictures would look like if the conditions were ideal.
Thanks for the call today ( your mobile number came up as anonymous thats why I didn't know who it was at first),

I just hope you are around when that rarity turns up - to get some decent pics

You're pulling it back Des but that Wheatear could be one that makes the difference;) I'm back in the morning in the vain hope another one turns up..

Thanks John - never straight forward these sub species! Sy needs to set up some ringing nets so we can have a good look at one;)

Hi Sy... I will get all the stuff sorted and email everyone

OK mate. Yes, back to work on the 12th.
I was going to offer to do the rounds of the local DIY/hardware outlets and see if they'd be interested in 'sponsoring' a raft by donating the makings.
My views were that the worst they could do would be to tell me where to shove it!

I can't see Ferg wanting to come away from the K&P for a White Arse even if it did end up to be a Greenland variety. You have to be rare, plentiful and of the order Chiroptera to even get his interest, these days. ;)
I've just resent an e-mail to him about ringing to coincide with the all dayer. Let's see if that works...

Flashes 1/4/2010 7.30am

Another cold but sunny morning at the Flashes. No Wheatear but that doesn't mean there's not one hoping around as I type!

The Little Owl was on the tree stump again. No change in the waders and BHG's Did hear 3 chiff chaffs and 1 Willow Warbler and actually saw the Cettis!

On the sailing pool about 30 Swallows were on and around the club house warming themselves up in the sun - a lovely sight. Also about 5 Sand Martin and one year tick for me - a Grey Wagtail on the pontoons bringing my total to 87.
Cheers

HI Sy
This year we are going to build a simple version like the one on country file - at slimbridge basically a floating pallet.
Next year we plan to do a version of the one in the image in this link
http://ecovigour.com/bedfont-lakes-tern-raft/

like you say no harm in asking we could even put their name on it - 'home base island' etc

That seems to have awoken the slumbering ringer!

"Hi Sy

Sorry for not getting back - been busy at work etc... In principle, yes - I intended doing a bit more at Upton this year anyway but I'm not sure about work commitments at this point. I have ringed at UW before on one of the all dayers and caught a Redwing (amongst other species such as Sylvias etc) so I know it is a good idea.

I'll be in touch.

Ferg"

Gert,

Can you mark my card? Which tree stump should I look for to see the owl? Also where was the Cetti's?

Hi Peter,

When you're in the main hide , look extreme left towards the farmhouse. The tree stump is quite obvious before you get to the farmhouse building - ie its to the right of the buildings. You'll need a scope to get a good look but its been on there a couple of times or on the hedge near the telegraph poles. The Cettis can usually be heard from the reeds to the Hen Pool ie the first little pool you walk past when you enter the Flashes.
Good luck
Cheers
Gert

Has this now taken over as the place to see the LO (vs atop the barn roof to the extreme right of the hide?).
