Good work confirming the Bittern's presence, John.
My only concern is that with all this free access we may be in for some assault trouble, Sir!

Did you see what I did there? B :)

It's only Rock and Roller but I like it
Sunday 23rd December

SAILING POOL
1 Cormorant, 2 Mute Swan, 4 GC Grebe, 5 Mallard, 2 Kingfisher, 2+ Siskin

FLASHES
53 Teal, 20 Mallard, 20 Lapwing, 9 Snipe visible, 2 Mute Swan, 1 Coot (3rd Flash), 9 Cormorant flew south, 10 Moorhen
Water level 0.66

MOORS POOL
4 Mute Swan (our family party - so 8 across the reserve), 24 Greylag Geese, 48 Cormorant, 194 Coot, 4 Moorhen, 3 GC Grebe, 1 Little Grebe, 35 Tufted Duck, 57 Mallard, 3 Shoveler (mmf), 29 Teal, 15+ Snipe, 29 Pochard, 96 Lapwing, 4 Lesser Redpoll, 1 Siskin, 8 Curlew in A38 field, Kestrel, Sparrowhawk, Kingfisher, 3 Herring Gull flew south. Another peak count was 21 cars in the car park!!
Not sure the calibration of the depth marker in Amy's Marsh but the water was 1.1 from the top.
Many thanks to Tim and Mary for their duck counts (and perhaps more importantly, the yummy Christmas cake)

The Bittern flew from the east shore and perched in the reeds along the northern boundary of the moors pool - repeating yesterday's pattern. Reasonable views through the scope but a bit distant.

A Goosander on the Sailing Pool was, the Bittern apart, the best bird of the day.

The only things I can add to Phil's counts were 2 Little Grebes and one LBBG on the Moors Pool and a Water Rail in the muddy area to the left of the east hide. Two of the latter called from either side of the causeway.

Feeding station at the Flashes was fairly quiet - a male & two female Bullfinches and four Reed Buntings were the best.

Forgive my inquisitiveness, but around what time did the Bittern show today?

Relapsus resurgam
Clocked in around midday and the weather soon turned dismal after the bright start - ended up driving around a few spots but not a lot about.
Saw 4 separate Kestrel and a Pair of noisy Buzzard in their usual places on my drive home.
Just to whet your appetites here's the total views I got of one of the 2010 Bitterns.
There were a few LTT's opposite Lifestyles....and a couple of Blues.

Moors late on:
The Bittern was seen by Craig from the new hide and by us in the east hide.
Although there were only 15 snipe on view at least 35 came off the broadmeadow at dark. A jack snipe was seen on the grassy promontory opposite pool island, by a Notts birder who was visiting specifically for it. I only counted 18 Pochard.

I may try for the Bittern tomorrow morning, although the weather forecast doesn't look great and I've got to be at work for 12 noon.

The drake Mandarin Duck I saw on Friday equalled my total of 122 species seen at the reserve during 2011. How gratifying it would be to eclipse that total with a sighting of that charismatic, skulking member of the heron family; an individual of which has recently returned to our little oasis next to the A38.:t:

Dont kick me for going off topic but I was thinking of getting a bridge camera as a combined Christmas / significant birthday present. Any recommendations from Upton birders for general and bird photography in and round the £250 mark; was initially looking at a Canon SX40.

I don't know it personally Phil, but reputable make, very high spec, excellent low-light performance, high burst rate and x35 zoom give you all that you're likely to need.
