Late news of 2 Sand Martin through the Moors Pool on Saturday afternoon as per Jared T.
Also Barn Owl again yesterday afternoon at the Moors Pool at 5pm.

Monday 12th March 0930-1545
Great to be back at the reserve for my first proper visit of 2018 - blown away by the amount of work the Tuesday work parties have got through. Also a first chance to take a prolonged at / from the new North Moors hide - might take a year or two to bed in but it has some real potential and is a real addition to the reserve. The combined sightings of myself and Andy P are as follows:
SAILING POOL
14 GC Grebe, 2 Little Grebe, 2 Mute Swan, 20 Tufted Duck, 35 Coot, 1 Oystercatcher, Green Woodpecker, small Sand Martin flocking peaking at 9 birds just before midday, Chiffchaff singing intermittently by the steps.
FLASHES
16 Avocet, 2 Oystercatcher, 2 Dunlin (winter plumage), 6 Snipe, 82 Lapwing, 1 Mute Swan, 1 Shelduck, 26 Teal, 12 Tufted Duck, 2 Greylag Geese over, 9 Coot, 10 Moorhen, adult Med Gull, Med x BH Gull hybrid, 2 Raven, Treecreeper showing very well along path in silver birches opposite Hen Pool Hide, 3 Pheasant, 2 Buzzard.
NORTH MOORS
3 Coot, 8 Tufted Duck, 2 Teal, 2 Moorhen.
MOORS POOL
3 Lapwing, 6 Snipe, 4 Oystercatcher, 2 Mute Swan, 1 Little Egret, 2 Grey Heron, 7 Cormorant, 4 Little Grebe, 3 Shelduck, 33 Shoveler, 36 Teal, 4 Gadwall, 34 Tufted Duck, 14 Pochard, c30 Coot, 6 Moorhen, 2 Herring Gull, 2 LBB Gull, Kestrel, Buzzard, 2 Pheasant behind the east hide.
No sight or sound of any Water Rail; likewise no definitive sighting of any Cetti's Warbler (some possible female type contact calls from the east side of the Moors Pool).

I visited the new North Moors hide twice in December and January, and there was a Water Rail close on the left of the hide on both occasions. So close, you could literally overlook it.

Work party Today
Thanks to all 16 vols and Andy Harris for another successful day.
Alan D. Bob O. Bob R. Charles. Dave H. Graham L. Ian Joh. Ian Jos. Julie W. Kim W. Nick F. Paul M. Roger S. Terry W. Tony B and me.
The scheduled work was for the most part completed. But we came across a few log jams in the Salwarp. From which a large amount of plastic debris was removed. Tree trunks large branches were hauled out , luckily Ian Joh had is wet suit on which made the task manageable.
Several willows overhanging the Salwarp were pollarded.
This task took up most of the crew's day so we didn't complete the removal of all the trees on the SW islands.
The 2 domed islands in the scrape and the two large islands off shore were all cleared. All the tree stumps were treated with glysophate.
Tony and Bob O checked the FOX fence and modified the sluice at the FLASHES ready to be opened for the new levels.
The only photos taken with my camera were of the island in the SW marsh being cleared of trees.
I have posted other pics off my phone on Twitter.

Today's Yellow-legged Gull is a very distinctive bird, missing both feet. It was noted at Upton Warren on two days in early May last year (including the Spring All-Dayer) and then at Belvide on the 1st June.

Yesterday's Kittiwake formed part of a marked inland movement of the species during the day - not quite sure what conditions prompted such an occurrence as (other than the rain) the weather seemed relatively benign. Other inland records yesterday included:

Late news from yesterday afternoon at the Moors Pool - Barn Owl flew over the car park at 5:10pm whilst a Nuthatch called from the North Moors Plantation as per Roy Porter.

From the Flashes Andy P reports a big influx of Avocet with at least 30 birds present. Also adult Med Gull, hybrid Med x BH Gull, 2 Oystercatcher, Cetti's Warbler near Hen Brook hide plus 3 Sand Martins over Sailing Pool.
