The question is about the bird in the front. Is this an immature gull, or maybe a skua / petrel? Taken in December 2019, Vancouver Island BC.

looks like a 2cy Thayer's Gull.

It's a (2cal year) Glaucous-winged Gull or hybrid, Lou.

You're right. I never looked closely. I saw darker backs then normal and presumed they were Calis.

well, i pondered over that one, peter, since it is plain dark brown. but bill looks awfully weak and the whole bird slender. still, what i've stubbornly overlooked is the prominent secondary skirt. scaps are mostly juvenile i guess, another pitfall.
