Good example of later starting birds yesterday. Total of two birds till 10:30. Then at 11:15:
11 Chipping Sparrows
4 House Finches
2 Carolina Chickadees
2 Ruby-crowned Kinglets
1 Downy Woodpecker
1 Yellow-bellied Sapsucker
1 Northern Mockingbird
1 Northern Cardinal
1 Orange-crowned Warbler.

Put a post on my blog about our three types of winter warblers.

Off to Costa Rica in three hours. Wonder if I'll have time for a bit of birding there before it gets dark? Anyway, I'll certainly be up and out at dawn tomorrow.

A lot of activity in and around the garden today. More activity than I've seen for a long time, maybe the colder weather is the reason. c50 Starlings, c25 Goldfinch, 3 Blackbirds, 3 Coal Tits, House Sparrows, Blue Tits and 8 Collared Doves.

The day started off well with aflock of assorted tits including 1 coal tit and at least 8 long tailed tits, plus numerous blue and great tits.

then we set off to mersey side.

bornwild spotted a buzzard sat on a fence post by the motorway. then i spotted one sat on top of a lamp post about 10 miles later.
we went by way of formby for an hour where i'm convinced i could hear goldcrests but couldn't actually see one in the trees to save my life.
a little later we watched a jay trying to hammer a peanut into the trunk of a tree.
we spent about 90 minutes here then moved on to parkgate, but not a lot in the way of pics due to a combination of bad light and the birds being half way to wales.

3 (at least ) hen harrier.
1 short eared owl.
4 kestrels watched one of them eating a vole through the scope.
a few mallards and teal.
5 little egrets flying back to roost.
a dozen or so redwings in the bushes behind the car park.(a lifer for bornwild) :)
a large flock of mixed geese and ducks, still working on an id for the geese but think they were probably pink feet.
1 very noisy male pheasant right in the middle of the marsh.
a couple of lesser black backed gulls.
we could hear curlews bubbling all afternoon and i did actually manage to see one in flight moving low down across the marsh.

really nice day hope tomorrow is as good.

Thanks all on the LTT, hopefully they will start appearing a bit more often now, they did last winter.

Jeff, looking forward to hearing about Costa Rica!

Karpman, great to see the photos from your garden. Jealous of the Greenfinch, that is a rare visitor to my garden.

Captaincarot sounds like you had a great day, very nice to see so many Redwings.

Been out shopping all day so will see what is about in the garden tomorrow.

had about 50 starlings in and around my garden today, which makes a nice change, as this is the best number for a while. Other birds included my regular visitors, blue great coal and willow tit. Painstakingly counted dunnocks quite a few times, eventually i confirmed my figure of 6, superb to watch though. 2 robins, had 6 collared doves in today too, plus green and goldfinches.

Talking of Starlings

Its a fine balance with the Starlings.

I have put a few feeders up near to the house so I am able to get a few photo opportunities of birds coming to the feeders. However the Starlings make the most of it so end up doing what they do best.........squabbling very noisily and sh1ting on the patio.

So my problem is between keeping every thing clean, keeping the patner happy (who isnt intrested in the birds... less so the Starlings) and getting photo opportunities such as the one below

Tricky one this, but I keep throwing a "deaf un" ;)

08.00am Buzzard flyover (well soar over), first one since July

and not a Carrion Crow in sight!!

OK not sure why but a few raptors this morning. I have just disturbed a Sparrowhawk in the garden (I didnt see it until I disturbed it), and it has flown out over the roof. Still a bit murky here so unable to say if male or female, size says male. Another bird that I havent had in the garden for a while.. Sept was the last sighting

Coal Tits! I now have a Coal Tit visiting!

Nice one Seagull. I'm always pleased to see the Coal Tits visiting too - they're so much 'secretive' than the other species of Tit. I have a couple who visit regularly at the moment.

Great birds to see, Dave. And I love that Starling picture. Pin sharp, great background and you captured the character of the fella. Good idea to move the feeder closer to the house - might try that myself when the weather settles down a bit.

Captaincarot - glad you had such a good days birding. Jealous of your Hen Harrier and Short eared Owl spots ;)

Mary - A resident Blackcap.....NICE! :t:

Have a good day all,

Up early this morning (thanks to the little one who doesn't know the meaning of a lie in!). I dismantled all the feeders and cleaned them all out, a couple had sprouting seeds caught in them.

Since I did that the garden has been non stop. Two Magpies and the squirrel have eaten all the peanuts between them. It's been raining non stop today which of course always brings out the birds.

Also had

3 Blue Tits
12 Goldfinch
10 Starlings
7 House Sparrows
2 Dunnocks
2 Blackbirds
3 Collared Doves
1 Robin

Had to replenished all 6 feeders today which consist of peanuts, seeds and fat balls. The seeds and fat balls always run out within the week where as the peanut feeders tend to last just over a week at the moment.Presumably as winter sets in the rate of consumption will increase.

Another Redwing today, as a few days ago it didnt come to ground, just surveyed from the tree above the feeder and left when the Magpies landed along side it

Cracking pic there dave, i know what has attracted them, I stuffed a suet log feeder with a berry treat, which is really colourfull, in fact its just like the breast colour of a male bullfinch. Jay has been in and out but not stayed any more than a few seconds. Everything else are missing the sunflower hearts,

Its a fine balance with the Starlings.

Ah, Redpolls! I'm green with envy, CB! ;)

refilled the seed feeder this morning which gave me a chance to get a few pics of the locals (see attached). The juvenile Collared Dove has been injured in a scrap of some sort - didn't fly away when I approached and stayed whilst I did the refill. I hope s/he recovers....

I put the bamboo perches on the feeders because the Robins and Chaffinches couldn't handle the squirrel proof guards, lol
