Looks like you're seeing plenty of birds in your gardens, Pam and Dave.

I thought the current cold front would bring lots of birds into our yards but no luck yet. Just our usual visitors.

Hey guys!

Awesome robin and pics barnstormer, I guess birds like that get wasted before they mature.

Been a strange day in the garden not many birds at all but some different ones or at least a little more rare for me.

Over cormorant, grey heron, buzzard.
In the field behind about 30 fieldfare.

In the garden boundaries Rook+jackdaws and a spawk.

superb pics as always bfb and jeff

Thanks, Karpman.

BTW, I spoke too soon in my last post. Two American Goldfinch just turned up at noon. They haven't noticed the thistle feeder yet, though. When they do, no doubt they'll invite friends along.

At present they''re sharing our platform feeder with Chipping Sparrows.

Jeff

CB/Dave/Captaincarot - Great to see you've had the Pink-footed Geese over your way. I don't think they come down as far as me so I hope one of you guys can get a snap of it to show us ;)

Captaincarot - Like those Blackbird pics, especially the one with its tongue out :t Looks like your day out yesterday was excellent and provided some great photo ops. I still haven't managed to 'capture' a Water Rail.

Wayne - hope santa reads BF and you get that camera, lol

TheSeagull - Coal Tits do seem to be less frequent visitors - keep your camera handy for the next whistle stop.

Dave - Jealous of your little Goldcrest and the Bullfinches. I hope 'my' Goldcrest comes back this winter

Chris
- what a good haul you get in your garden! Superb. Great pics too.

Karpman - congrats on the Barnacle Geese sighting. Love the thrill of a new bird. Your Robin picture is gorgeous - it has a really nice light to it and I like the twinkle in the Robin's eye.

Brainstormer - what can I say....freaky Robin indeed :-O

Jeff
- What a pretty little bird that Blue-gray Gnatcatcher is. Great to see it. And glad that you've had the American Goldfinch turn up.

Me, I've mostly been out today, enjoying the glorious sunshine. Off up at my local reservoir (if your interested you can read the details here: http://www.birdforum.net/showthread.php?t=158273). Saw my first ever Fieldfare :t:

Hope the sun shines tomorrow

Oh and congratz on the new lifer dave:t:

Cheers Hobbes I'm rather proud of that robin pic makes me smile:-O Dave gave me a good shove in the right direction otherwise i'd still be working out how the lens cap comes off lol:-O

Just looking through some of the pics from the garden today this crow eating my fresh fatballs the cheek! They are for show only:t::-O

Went out after some short eared owls earlier on was not good but was kinda fun and free pint and a warm smile from a barmaid finished the trip off.B :)

Karpster!

lol, strange conincidence....I was going to head out late this afternoon for what I think is a short-eared owl near me....but when it started to rain I decided I'd sit and watch telly instead, lol.

Here's hoping we get a sighting soon. If it's not raining tomorrow afternoon I might try.

feeders stepped up a few gears a couple of days ago after filled up with black sunflower seeds (only ones the shop had) nuts and fatballsinside a fatball feeder plus monkeynuts hear there and everywhere including in the inside of an empty hanging basket thats still on the fence, which turned into a squirrels mery go round, very entertaining, but out the he came with 3 of the 5 monkeynuts in his paws!
Moving on to birds, Great Spotted Woodpecker has made a few visits, but they have been brief as its a weary bird, very conscious of its surroundings, so heres to more visits from it. Song thrush in today, first in a few weeks.
willow tits, both birds
great and blue tits in double figures around 10 and 15 respectively today, 2 or 3 coal tits. My trees were filled with around 25 long tailed tits the other day. good numbers of chaffinch, of which i gave up counting as they were up down left and right and hiding under my daughters trampoline! 2 maybe 3 robins which were scrapping with upto 6 dunnocks.
Had some superb close views of magpie coming down and taking monkey nuts, but my camera has not been at the ready,:C.

All the best guys.

Our feeders were empty within 3 days of re-filling them this week.I can only view the birds that visit our garden at the weekend due to work commitments.Hopefully tomorrow I will be able to update you all with what I have seen. However, this morning a very small quite chubby bird was came into the garden picking up seeds on the ground that had fallen from the feeders. Not sure what it was have checked the books but still unable to identify it.Similar to a sparrow in some respects but certainly not a sparrow.
I am reasonably new to serious bird watching so at this stage I'm not quite up to speed as yet like the rest of the frequent posters on this thread.
The birds being reported along with their numbers is certainly good to see, this data could well be useful.

thanks for the comments guys.

hobbs that water rail was a lifer for both me and bornwild, she took the pics.

we had to go and pick up the biggest fleabay bargain of the year today.
400d 18-55 battery grip 3 and half gigs worth of memory and 10 batteries plus a remote for 250 notes.
me very happy bunny.
it was on our way to marshside nearly too only a short detour so the rest of the day was spent wondering how many more curlews we would see i've actually seen more today than in the whole rest of my life i know for a fact that there were at least 9 birds there and possibly up to 30. trouble is they were all flying about like mad and calling so counting them was rather difficult

while looking over the marsh someone asked us if we'd seen any black tailed godwits.

which we hadn't and told them so.

then we went and looked over the reserve itself and i'm guessing there were at least 300 of em.

lots of canada goose a fair few greylags and a small group of 10 or so pinkfeets.

masses of teal in the hundreds again and at least a dozen pairs of pintail.

to be honest not enough daylight to see everything that's there.

Amy, Brit in Quebec.
so so far behind! its got really busy round here - so me beautiful photos from so many people!
Jeff - really enjoying the blog, some very exotic looking birds in there, must be strange to go from that to birding in the snow in such a short time!
Chris -glad quea is ding well, your garden seems to be heaving with birds! I got the grand count of 1 American Crow today!
I love the albino robin and am now on the wrong page to see who uploaded it sorry! So delicate looking.

Another lifer for me this week - Great Horned Owl. Flew into a tree above us as we walked the dog, sat in front of the full moon very atmospherically for five minutes, then swooped down over our heads - fantastic!
Not a great shot, but caught the moment. I got goosebumps! Together with the Peregrine hanging out on the bizarre public art up the road its been a 'big' bird week.

Hi BS
Get the camera at the ready for the unidentified LBJ then add an attachment and we can try to id it. Sounds like it could be a Dunnock, sometimes they can look a bit chubby, did it have silvery grey face and neck?
Looking forward to your update of garden visitors

What a fantastic day! I've never seen a Curlew or a Black tailed Godwit so I can imagine that 30 and 300 of them respectively was pretty spectacular. Getting a lifer....and a decent picture of it makes for an even better day ;)

I know what you mean about the daylight. I had hoped to get more in yesterday but it got dark so early I had to 'give up'.

Have a good day

The birds are being very wary in my garden at the moment I have no idea why, I changed things round a little maybe that spooked a bit.

The corvids have been coming again mainly Jackdaws but with carrion crows and occasional rook also.
Missing me house sparrows and goldfinch at the moment not seen them for a while:C

Just witnessed the Collared doves mating in the oak tree, how cool is that in December...

They may be nesting before the end of the month depending on the weather!! Collared Doves have been known to nest at any time of year.

18 Pink Footed Geese gone over CB :t: In formation but suprisingly silent as they went straight over the garden :t:
Garden tick & Lifer all in one go B :) Thanks for the heads up CB

Mega afternoon here will update later, keeping an eye out for more geese overhead.

I knew you would see some sooner or later. Yesterday had Goosander, Pochard, Tufted Duck, Shoveler, Teal and of course Mallard locally!!

Great pics as usual Jeff :t::t:
