well still not working due to bad back but the gold finches down the bottom of the garden got to me. put my tens machine on and bumbled round for a look.

there's about 20 of them and they're feeding on alder seeds. rather interestingly too i saw a small flock of sparrows. they might not be in the garden but they're only 30 or so yards away so i would presume it's only a matter of time till they appear.

bornwild has an id pic but i will let her post it as she took it to see how the goldfinches would show up from the bedroom window. and got 2 birds in the pic that we're not sure what they are. possible linnet or redpoll i think.

CC / BW attached a couple of pics one of Linnet and the other Redpoll to help with your pic ID
I tend to regard Linnet as near Coastal bird so fair cahnce your bird is Redpoll
<although this time of year garden food is readily available and good for most birds so linnet could be likely>

going off that they're probably linnets there's a definite hint of pink about the breast. trouble is they're also partly obscured from view by alder cones and slightly out of focus haha.

she didn't even realise they were there when she took the pic

ok, just to confuse you a bit further here is another shot of a Redpoll with a bit more breast pink colouration

It's true, I quite like Pigeons
My local Reservoirs

I thought I'd post about my 2 hours at the Reservoirs this morning; it was actually sunny for a change, which gave me a chance of getting some pictures.

Loads of birds as usual, also a few firsts for me (Common Sandpiper, Pied Wagtail, Red-necked Parakeet, Common Gull (seen before but no pictures)).

Other birds seen:

  • Cormorants
  • Grey Herons
  • Black-headed Gulls
  • Lesser Black-backed Gulls
  • Common Gulls
  • Herring Gulls
  • Goldcrests
  • Great Tits
  • Blue Tits
  • Long-tailed Tits
  • Wrens
  • Blackbirds
  • Song Thrushes
  • Great Spotted Woodpecker
  • Pochards
  • Tufted Ducks
  • Mallards
  • Coots
  • Moorhens
  • Canada Geese
  • Greylag Geese
  • Swans (youngsters)
  • Carrion Crows
  • Magpies
  • Chaffinches

I'm bound to have missed a few species off that list, but those are the ones I can recall ATM. Quite a good 2 hours really, can't go again until next week when my son is off work. I'm looking forward to the Winter over there as, I can't even guess what I might see. There's 10 Reservoirs in acres of land, so I can only explore a bit at a time.

Rather than re-upload pictures I'll post the links:

Pied Wagtail (distant, so not a great picture)

Common Sandpiper (also distant, but not a bad picture)

Young Mute Swan

Common Gull (messed up the exposure a bit)

There's also a couple more pictures in my gallery.

As for my garden, still full of birds, no new visitors.

I like your mockingbrd Jeff. I am a fan of our Thrush family and the mockingbird has a thrush like appearance. The lovely bluey-grey pastel tint looks good.
Good luck with DSLR (Keep an eye on the for sale section on here, when someone gets rid of stuff it usually means they are desperate for cash to fund an upgrade, plus a little bartering usually means a bargain :t:)
Dave

I already took the plunge, Dave. Sony A230 and Tamron 70-300mm DI LD lens. $600, so not bad. Now I'll have a toy to play with over Xmas.

Don't you just hate it when that happens, lol. I did the same recently although not at ISO1600. I think I was at ISO800 but the pictures were rubbish as a result. No rescuing them unlike your little Blue Tit - nice pose.

Chris - doesn't it make such a difference when the sun decides to come out. Good haul for your morning too. Congrats on the 4 firsts as well - superb. I had a good morning too out at a local reservoir and saw my first Ruff :t:

Jeff - looking forward to seeing the results of your new 'toy' ;)

Karpman - you and me both my friend - Redpoll would be very nice.

Bornwild - lol, great timing on the Gull photo. Love it.

Dave - hope you're sleeping soundly and the sun stays up for you to see it.

My garden is now hosting swarms of little House Sparrows who have obviously been stalking the Blue Tits and discovered where the free food is, lol. Noisy little fellas!

Have a good day all,
Hobbes

Congrats on the 4 new birds, Chriskten! And on your Ruff, Hobbes!

BTW, I don't have my camera yet. It'll arrive in about a week, just before the college closes for two weeks, giving me plenty of time to watch our garden birds and to visit a few local parks. Should be good, as ducks and geese are just starting to arrive here.

been busy most of the day, but fairly busy incluiding all of my regular visitors, filling nyger seed up tomorrow morning so should be seeing plenty of finches, hopefully pulling bullfinches in from the trees.

If i hadnt noticed the squirrel in the attached photo this morning, the nuts would have been gone by the time we got back!
Bearing in mind its a weigthy feeder, filled with nuts, and has a terracotta lid which has a hook which screws in, thankfully it landed on the grass! These squirrels are getting cleverer by the day

Had a steady day here today - Dunnocks, Great Tit, Blue Tit, Magpie, Starlings, Sparrows, Blackbirds, Robin and a dozen Goldfinch.

I did have a Greenfinch on one of the feeders for a while, it's the first one in the garden since the summer.

How clever is your Squirrel Michael? Great to watch even if they do create havoc!
