Lovely Blackbird, Hobbes, and Sandpiper, Dave. Must be nice to be allowed to use your camera.

It's been cold, gray and wet here for ages. Not our usual weather at all and very depressing. Reminds me of summers when I was growing up in Carlisle. But they say we'll be back to blue skies today and warmer for the weekend. Hope so because my 2-week Xmas/New Year holiday starts at 4:30 today.

Photo of Chipping Sparrow is with my new Sony before it was removed. Photo of Ruby-crowned Kinglet with my old one. Both at same distance at full zoom in similar light. (And both through the same dirty window.) I think I'm going to like the Sony.

we're out of seed so is our tesco's which is a bit of a bugger loads of birds and nowt to give em.

incidentally forgot to mention driving through salford at 11 yesterday morning and right over head was a small flock of pinkfeets. nearly crashed watching them.

jeff don't worry you've only got to be aburning martyr for a week.

you could refuse to do anything at all on christmas day except faff with the camera, it won't help this time but she might remember it next time and give it early

Not the garden but at work today in the sub-zero temperatures!! Meadow Pipit over (no doubt moving due the cold weather) and 9 Goldfinches roosting in willows next to our warehouse yard. No Pinkfeet despite the ideal flight conditions.

Brilliant :t:

Mega busy last 2 days.... again Bullfinches 1 male & 2 female (3 is a garden record :t:)

I too have just purchased bulk seed from a local produce / fishmonger in the village. 12kg nyjer, 12.5kg Sunflower hearts, 12.5kg Sunflower seed....

It really does work out loads cheaper in the long run. It works out just over a third cheaper than keep buying small bags. I bought a 25kg sack of Sunflower seeds for £20 just before I went to Ireland in August, I still have over a quarter bag left at xmas. anyway well stocked up now:t:

Nice blue sky today so will try a couple of garden snaps, sorry to keep rubbing it in Jeff ;)

Enjoy the weekend, loking forward to everyones updates

OK so the sun didnt stay out for too long

Still did manage to get a few pics. These are all from inside the house as it was just toooooooo cold to venture out for long with a camera o:)

The gull pics just show how close they come to the house, they have not been cropped at all..... they were hungry for some wholemeal bread :t:

It has gone very dark again with snow likely soon

Really pleased as the Redwings have been in and out the garden all day

Great minds ... I used that threat yesterday and got permission to take the camera out on a birdwalk later this morning.

I finished work early today and got to watch our yard in daylight for a while. It was pretty busy:
Downy Woodpecker
Northern Mockingbird
Northern Cardinal
5-6 House Finches
5-6 Chipping Sparrows
3 White-winged Doves
2-3 Yellow-rumped Warblers
1-2 Ruby-crowned Kinglets
8-9 Cedar Waxwings
6-7 American Robins.

Best of all was a bird we've only had once before, Eastern Phoebe.

No change in my garden, although I think Chaffinches are into double figures. Not all in the garden, some are in what's left of the Blackberry Bush at the back.

But that's not why I posted:

You know how people moan? Like, "I'm not going to work today, I've got a bit of a Cold", or, "I can't be bothered to tidy up today, I've got a headache"? Well watching Wildlife makes me realise just how weak and lazy most Humans are.|=)| (note the smiley)

Last week a new Pigeon joined the flock in the garden; it had an injured, possibly broken, leg. It was in so much pain that it needed to use both wings to support it's weight on the ground (I've seen this before, but usually one wing is used as a crutch, never two). It would almost drag itself to the food, stopping a few times to recover from the effort. Before anyone asks, no I didn't bring it inside or take it to the Vets, as it could fly; I've also seen Pigeons recover from worse without help. Obviously I did favour it, throwing food near so it didn't have to go far.

Anyway, within a few days two wings as a crutch became one. It behaved perfectly normally in every way that mattered. It flew to the food, eating like there's no tomorrow, pecking smaller Pigeons that got there first.

Today it hops faster than some of the other Pigeons can run. It's still only got one useful leg, but I don't need to favour it anymore, as it's quite capable of looking after itself. It even managed to somehow fly into the tree, hop along the branches, and get to the seed trays that are meant for the Collys. It didn't look pathetic doing this, it looked very determined.

It always amazes how other Species just get on with it, whereas we moan.|=)|

Good post Chris, and I have said this before, observations like that can only really be observed in the garden where you really do get to know "your birds"
People have all that info on their doorstep and fail to see it.... too busy watching telly

Dave

PS
I have been ironing this afternoon :eek!: and am able to watch the garden as I do it..... would have missed the Mistle Thrush if I had been watching the telly while doing the ironing ;)

Chris must be quite heartening to see how it's managed to survive and support itself like that!

This morning has been busy, lots of Tits about - Blue, Great and Coal though the Blue Tits really don't like the Coal Tits and don't just chase them out of the garden they chase off round the backs of the trees. Two Robins have been in the garden too, at first they seemed happy to feed near each other but just now one has chased the other off.

There have been 11 Goldfinch, Dunnocks, Sparrows, Blackbirds and the odd Starling too. I threw some extra nuts and seed on top of the shed and the Magpie has been tucking into those. Very nice to watch.

Good Goldfinch count Pam :t:
I too have put some extra peanuts out on the patio... (with a little hope of getting some pictures)

Only Starlings tucking in at the mo

I'd love to see a Mistle Thrush in the garden, Dave. I glimpsed one on the fence at the back earlier in the year, but it never came any closer.

Pam,

Sounds like you've got a lot of activity in your garden, you have a good mix of birds. I'm a bit jealous of the Goldfinches, but then we all seem to have at least one species that others wish they had.

BTW, Pam, Dave, watch it with the loose nuts, Pigeons will kill for them.|=)| They can't break into nuts in shells though, although the Wood Pigeons swallow them whole.
