Cor, you turn your back for 5 minutes and the posts come rolling in, superb.

CB, Meadow Pipits observed at work....cool!

Jeff, I'm glad to hear you got to play with the camera already and nice one on the Eastern Phoebe - I'm expecting pictures next time ;).

Dave, stacks of ironing round here when you're done....and you can bring your Mistle Thrush and Bullfinches with you :t: Great collection of garden photos today. Always brighten up the forum, thanks.

Chris, great pigeon observations. It is amazing how birds do seem to manage with one leg missing or injured. (note to self - pick up loose peanuts before pigeons choke on them, lol)

Disneynut, Magpies are real beauties when they show off their iridescent feathers. I used to have a couple who visited but not seen them for a while.

Karpman, That's a very good record shot in spite of the distances involved. You can see clearly the colours of the plumage and shape of the bird. Great stuff. I hope your good lady recovers soon. ;)

My garden is covered in about 10 inches of snow and I put out a tray full of sunflower hearts, bread crumbs and peanuts.....and most of the birds except the Robin persisted in scrabbling around in the snow in their usual spots instead of actually going to the food. I felt like I should make a loud-speaker annoucement saying the food is on the BIG, OBVIOUS tray in the middle of the garden!! :-O

Apart from the usual crowd, one solitary Starling popped in which was nice.
Keep warm all,
Hobbes

It's true, I quite like Pigeons
Don't worry about the Pigeons, Hobbes, they won't choke. If I throw out loads of peanuts, the Pigeons fill their crops within seconds. In my garden the Pigeons even bully the Squirrels, but not until the Squirrel has opened a nut in shell.

I forgot to mention earlier, no snow here as such, but very cold. It took me 10 minutes to break the ice in the bird baths at first light this morning. I then had to break the ice again and refill the baths before the afternoon. So I've emptied the water out tonight, well not much water mostly ice that I needed boiling water to help shift. Also, when I went to spray the ARK-KLENS disinfectant on the paths, nothing happened. The bottle just rattled as it was full of ice.|=)|

Just an observation:
I thawed out the bird bath earlier on with some warm-hot water. Two Starlings came to investigate shortly after (a little steam still rising from the bath). They drank and then had a sauna. they both paddled and fluffed about in it.

A few hours later (water obviously freezing cold again) more starlings came to bath. I can tell you it was incredibly cold out there so these birds really are hardy souls.

They were bathing while I was freezing just watching them

It's true, I quite like Pigeons
They're not like us weedy Humans, Dave, they just do what they must to survive. I don't think our species started off soft, but we certainly are now, compared to all other species.

I watched the birds yesterday, when it was snowing, keep shaking off the snow so it didn't settle on them. Hardly any of the birds were under any cover, just perched waiting for their turn at the feeders. Today the Starlings were bathing in the middle of the baths while surrounded by ice.

Actually, the other night when it snowed, I thought that Squeaky (who still roosts on the window sill) might be a Pigeon-shaped snowman in the morning.|=)|

well about 2 minutes of garden observation this morning while i put some food out. but as i got there chaffinches blackbird robins blue tits great tits and longtailed tits all scarpered as i got to the top of the steps.

then off to see my parents at clumber park as it's me mothers birthday today.

4 grouse by the side of the woodhead.
when we got there bornwilds lens had gone mental and refused to work properly. so all the pics were at 55mm max on my camera.

oodles of the usual waterfowl mute swans mallards moorhens coots.

plus a few tufted ducks. some of them walking about on top of the ice the lake is about 70% iced over up to about an inch thick.

plus clumber has a large flock of resident canada geese who had picked up one not canada goose but didn't see it for long enough to tell whether it was a greylag, or something more unusual.

had a look for the hawfinches but couldn't find them though i did see one gold crest. years first in fact the first one i've seen for 20 years or so. now am happy.
topped it off with a nice meal in the cafe and then a drive back in the dark fog and snow lovely.

it would appear that it's what's technically know as knackered.

goin to have to get it fixed.

when you turn the zoom ring it doesn't do anything at all and it will only focus when it's in macro mode. it seems to be stuck at 300mm.

am dead chuffed about the gold crest only ever seen them once before in my life and that was also at clumber.

Lovely bird there, where is your local patch? Not seen one aroubd here for a while, so chance for me yet.

Been out most the day and sorting stuff out for the rest, so not a lot of stuff, just the usual visitirs making their appearence.

Going to fill up the feeders in the morning, and replace the extra peanut feeder. Many thanks to one of the squirrels tat completely TRASHED it the other day, caught him taking it off the bracket, and tipping it up and down, later on i caught it running around the garden with it! so funny, but the feeder is a mess, lid broken off, and the wire mesh was dinted!

Hi guys and thanks for the kind words about my missus, We have just got back from a+e and are a little dismayed and disappointed but thats another story.

My short birding trip to Ibstock's Kelham Bridge this morning was great and the kite fantastic!

From the garden the day started off odd to say the least had a parakeet thing on the fence a little larger than a starling grey with a red stripe.
And to top things off today the long-tailed tits were back not that i managed any photos i was just standing in the kitchen whilst me missus got ready for the hospital trip.

A real days of ups and down and i still got a blog to catch up on lol:t:

Merry xmas

No change in my garden, although I think Chaffinches are into double figures.

You know how people moan? Like, "I'm not going to work today, I've got a bit of a Cold", or, "I can't be bothered to tidy up today, I've got a headache"? Well watching Wildlife makes me realise just how weak and lazy most Humans are

It always amazes how other Species just get on with it, whereas we moan.|=)|

I've noticed more Chaffinches to.

I know what you mean about the moaners. I have to work with some of the world record holders!!

CC, hope you can get the lens fixed (under warranty??).

Micheal - I like the photographic evidence presented of the squirrel crime, lol. You need one of those super-duper squirrel proof jobs. ;)

Karpman....really sorry that things aren't going so well with you guys. I hope a good night's sleep brings a little healing.

CB - yup, I'm all stocked up and live across the road from one of those mini-Tescos so no worries on the supplies front.

'night all

Ooo, very nice Jeff....a Pileated Woodpecker? A cheerful looking chappy.

More snow here last night. Put out the BIG OBVIOUS tray of food in the middle of the garden again this morning and the Dunnocks are still trying to negotiate the hanging seed feeder (without success), lol.

Lots of posts to catch up on just since yesterday - its good that people are to see so much activity. Karpman hope things are a little better with you and yours today.

Hobbes, I love the colours of the Magpie (used to want my hair that colour when I was younger!!!), they are beautiful.

Chris, lwe don't get pigeons in our garden - only the occasional Wood Pigeon and they have become infrequent visitors at the moment!

This morning again has already been busy. Blue Tits, Great Tit, Dunnocks, Blackbirds, Sparrows, Goldfinch. The two Robins have been back again and didn't bother about each other this time. One of them actually ate off the sunflower hearts feeder - never seen a Robin do that before, they usually prefer the tray or the floor.

So Far Today

Been hectic here in Fowlmere since the snow, had to go to store to top up on all my feed. I feed in the front garden suet balls (out of the net) and fat blocks with fruit. These are mostly used by Great and Blue tit and the the daily feed round of the Long Tails. Back garden there are 7 large feeders using a free flow mix (harrisons) 2 nigers feeders and bird table for loose feed.
So far this morning up to 9:30 the following has visited.
Greenfinch, Dunnock, Great & Blue Tits, Blackbird (lots of males scrapping) Goldfinch on the Niger feeders, Collared doves, Woodpigeon, Male Pheasant, Female Reed Bunting, Wren, Chaffinch, resident Song Thrush, Robin and Starling.
So far the Sparrow Hawk has yet to put in an appearance but its normally around lunchtime ironically enough! There is a small covey of Red Legged in the rape field at the back but have not yet seen the Grey's,
Mr Squirrell making full use of the table.

I have no idea exactly how many coal tits are visiting as they so quickly come and go. The most I have seen at one time are 5.
As for the woodpigeon I always think of my dad whenever I hear one he always said that they were saying "My toe hurts Betty"

My Grandfather was a gamekeeper and always used to say that a woodpigeon calling was saying "take two shots paddy-take two" next time you hear one think of this and see for yourself how accurate it is !!
