Very busy at the bird feeder today! (1 Viewer)

What a beautiful Robin BS.

Looks like the Redpolls have moved on now. From December 12th to March 7th they appeared on the feeders everyday, numbers ranging between 2 and 9.
A very enjoyable winter!!

Pair of Bullfinch for the afternoon along with some very vocal Greenfinch.

Highlight was a Grey Heron over the garden being "mobbed, well at least chased by a pair of Black Headed Gulls.

It's true, I quite like Pigeons
Two hours at the Reservoirs

Not garden related, but I thought that I give a brief account of my 2 hours at the Reservoirs this morning. If you are thinking about going to your local Reservoirs/Reserve/Lake/?, maybe this will encourage you|=)|.

My local Reservoirs is Walthamstow Reservoir Complex (10 large Reservoirs, there's more info about it in the Opus on BF); there's everything there from Peregrines to Pied Wagtails - Goosanders to Goldeneyes - Common Gulls to Great Blacked-backed Gulls. There was even a Dusky Warbler over there recently (which is why I never went until it had gone, I like it when it's nice and quiet over there|=)|) So to this morning:

Well firstly, it was cloudy, dull, and cold, but as the weather forecast was for bright and sunny spells, I wasn't too surprised. I did my usual route walking round, well I have a number of routes as I can't see all of the Reservoirs in 2 hours, and my joints can't handle much more than that (*can hear violins*). Basically where I walk depends on what I aim to see, and how I feel when I wake up in the morning. OK, I'll be honest, mostly I don't have a plan, as I'm not bothered what I see, I always see birds and mammals, sometimes some fish, so I always go home happy.

Today I had a couple of species that I wanted to see that I knew were there; Slavonian Grebe, Smew, Goosander, Goldeneye, Shelduck, Grey Wagtails (because they run away as soon as they see me), and I wanted to see where the Peregrines were nesting, oh, and get a better picture of a Green Woodpecker. When I got there, I changed my mind about the Slavonian Grebe and Goosander, as they are close to where the Dusky Warbler is/was seen, and I didn't feel like dodging scopes and tripods if it was still showing.|=)| Anyway, enough of the plan.

This is becoming a long post, I think I'll just give the highlights. I saw all of the usual suspects:

  • Canada and Greylag Geese
  • Shovellers
  • Gadwalls
  • Teals
  • Tufted Ducks
  • Mallards
  • Pochards
  • Great Crested Grebes
  • Little Grebes
  • Great, Blue, and LT Tits
  • Blackbirds
  • Magpies
  • Carrion Crows
  • Black-headed, Common, Herring, and Lesser Black-backed Gulls
  • Cormorants
  • Grey Herons
  • Chaffinches
  • Egyptian Geese

I also saw Shelducks and Grey Wagtails, and got rubbish pictures of both.

It was just a little crazy over there though, Cormorants were almost constantly flying back and forth with twigs for their nests on the islands, as were the Grey Herons. The Green Woodpecker had also decided to move to one of the islands, and was calling most of the time that I was there, oh and in between the calls was drumming. The drumming was very loud considering it was coming from 100 yards away on the island; it may have been a GSW doing the drumming, not sure.

Every bird seemed to be fighting or displaying. I saw loads of male Chaffinches fighting in mid-air (there are 100s at these Reservoirs). Geese were at it too, though not in flight. There was a Greylag that was flying back and forth for over an hour, calling all of the time. Damn, this post is getting too long; let's just say that it was a hive of activity.

So hopefully you get the idea that there's a lot going on, so get out there and see it before it's too late.|=)| But don't forget it's happening in your gardens too.

I've attached a couple of pictures taken in low light, just to give an idea of what I saw.

Great pics of a great bird, Barnstormer!
Looks like you had a very productive time, ChrisKten.

Our yards still have some winter birds, although Am Goldfinch seem to have left.

The college campus is largely a construction site. However, the retention ponds are untouched and are busy with birds: I just saw Belted Kingfisher, 2 Double-crested Cormorants, 3 Great Egrets, 2 Snowy Egrets, 2 Ring-necked Ducks and 3 Lesser Scaup.

Pigeons

Hey all,

I recently set-up a feeder in my backyard and have had a few lovely cardinal and blue jay visitors so far. The issue is with pigeons.
A gang of them have discovered my feeder and won't go away!

Does anyone have tips for dissuading pigeons while still attracting other birds?

Thanks!

Welcome SauceyPaul. I would suggest you put food on the ground as I think the pigeons would be more likely to leave the feeders alone then. Also perhaps changing the feeder may help. What sort do you have at the moment (post the picture if you have one)?

Wish I could, CB, but introducing birds to new countries never seems to work out well!

BTW, took the morning off work today to visit a local park. Very very foggy and mainly just lots (and lots) of common birds - Am Coots, Common Moorhens, Pied-billed Grebes, White Ibis, etc. The highlight was standing in thick fog between two huge (12 foot?) male alligators as they bellowed out a duet/duel, water droplets bouncing up from their backs. Their calls were so loud and low-pitched that I could literally feel them vibrating in my stomach. Pure magic! (The only other time I've felt this kind of vibration was in Kruger National Park and that was lion-induced.)

I only hope some of my photos do the alligators justice. I'll see this evening.

I don't need you to introduce them over here just give them a helping hand!! Say to the Wirral coast. They can fly the last few metres.

I hope you didn't get to close. Arn't alligators fast runners over short distances?

in general gators wont eat live people unless you startle them or your near a nest. crocs eat live anything that fits in their mouth.
jeff i would have loved to see those gators calling, one of the funniest things i saw was looking off the side of the challenger shuttle memorial in florida. a gator sat in the water with just it's head sticking out and sat squarely between its eyes was a turtle sunbathing.

not much about inour garden when i look outof the window but the food keeps disappearing. did see 2 perregrine today up at dovestones the rspb are setting up an observation for their nesting april and may this year so that will be nice to see

I'm with you about the difference between gators and crocs, CC. You might like some of the photos on my most recent blog: I managed to get a shot of the water bubbling off a gator's back as it bellowed.

Congrats on the Woodpecker, Dave! We haven't had a new yardbird for ages.

We're off to Galveston for the weekend, hoping to catch the start of shorebird migration. A cold front is just moving down through our area and so we might be lucky.

Enjoy the weekend, everyone!

I had a very rare visit from a Chaffinch this morning, plus lots of busy Goldfinch and Sparrows, all the usuals too. No sign of the Coal Tit of the LTT's in a few days though.

Cheers Pam and I dont take it for granted.

I enjoy the fact that they choose my garden. As Chris eluded to a week or so ago they brighten the day up and we all get a thrill when we look out into our garden / yard.

I do have to say that seeing the return of the GSW today is just brilliant. I really did enjoy last year when he (and sometimes she) visited for 5 months. :t:

I even interupted the youngest`s homework today to come and watch him pecking away on 3 or 4 trees by the feeders.

The Bullfinches are becoming more regular now :t:

What will tomorrow bring?? Thats what we enjoy most, the unexpected

CB I did think about posting but the pics are terrible and my description is sketchy! It could have been a few different birds when I checked my guide!

Dave a busy garden already this morning!

We have had a pair of Great Tits squabbling with a pair of Blue Tits, usually the Blue Tits win but the GT stood their ground today and they ended up sharing the feeders. We've also had Woodpigeon, Collared Dove, Starlings, 4 Dunnocks, Blackbirds, House Sparrows, Goldfinch and a Robin.

The House Sparrows are still collecting nest materials in the hedge in the front garden so we have put a little food out on along the bottom of the hedge, which has disappeared pretty quick.

All is quiet at the moment, not for long I hope as i'm hoping to show off the birds to my parents who are on their way over!

Not a very busy day today, but enlivened by two crows trying to stuff as many peices of bread into their beaks as possible.

Otherwise several long tail tits, plenty of Goldfinches and Starlings. But, just as i thought all was done along came a lesser Redpol which arrived with and fed with some Goldfinches. Is this normal behaviour does anybody know?

Hi Guys
I've been fighting off a stinking cold all week so have been a bit random on gallery comments and posts. Sorry about that. My sinuses and ears are still blocked and I feel thoroughly rubbish but....

....I was cheered up this afternoon when I noticed that the 2 Goldfinches were back and feeding well at the Sunflower hearts. I also now have a regular set of at least 3 Starlings who roost, and feed a little, from the bushes at the bottom of the garden.

It's amazing that after years of waiting/hoping for Goldfinches, they have suddenly found the feeder and the 2 are now visiting regularly, albeit briefly.

Took a few pictures this afternoon so will sort through those and see if anything is worth adding later.

Hobbes
