Very busy at the bird feeder today! (1 Viewer)

Had a quick look through and some very nice photos, now I just need to read all the posts i've missed!

I thought i'd give it a few days of garden watching to see if the lack of trees has made any difference. Thursday was very quiet thought we did have a pair of Mistle Thrush around for a while.

Luckily it's perked up again, we've had Goldfinch (upto 8 at times, which is an increase), Blue Tits, Great Tits, Starlings, Blackbirds, Dunnocks, House Sparrows, M & F Greenfinch, Woodpigeons, Collared Doves. The House Sparrows are still picking nesting materials from the garden at the front too.

The only bird missing has been the Robin, which is usually a daily visitor, I had a very brief glimpse of one this afternoon in the neighbours garden but it sadly hasn't been in the garden that i've seen.

So it seems that we still have a good selection of birds despite the missing trees, though there is definitely not as much noise from Starlings as they fly into roost in whats left in an evening so I guess there isn't as many birds.

Dont trust my weather predictions...... Dark clouds dispersed and left nice sunshine for the remainder of the day, a little blustery though (All in all you could say a good laundry day!)

Didnt get to spend as much time as I thought watching the garden, but turned out to be incredibly quiet. The sunflower seeds have not needed topping up for two days now, definatly a first on that score.

Carrion making the most noise today, half a dozen cruising the space above the garden when not perched on the tallest trees making a right racket. 2 Magpies and c10 Jackdaws and 15+ Starlings were vying for the airspace with the carrions. At least 2 Rook coming and going over the garden... these birds are looking magnificant (so are the Carrion) and my aim is to entice one onto the lawn this week to get a close up pic.

Housesparrows are low in number only 2 male and a single female in the bushes along side the patio, they have come for seed now and again but not seen them since before lunch. Blackbirds and Feral pigeons again have been quiet, the pigeons happy to sit on the roof of our house and the Blackbirds were the very early birds. 2 Woodpigeon have spent most of the day in the oak tree only allowing the Collared Dove pair the lower branches and only moving when the Carrion crows barge in.

On the actual feeders low numbers of Greenfinch (4) and Goldfinch (5) certainly the smallest numbers for ages. 2 Great tits and 2 Blue tits have been in and out for most of the day and only 2 Chaffinches turned up but not until after 4pm.

The star of the garden was a brief visit from the female Reed Bunting again, I think her partner was with her but I only spotted a glimpse of him as they flew away against the murky coloured sky.

Missing regulars today are: Robin, Dunnock, Redpoll, Coal tit

The neighbours doing gardening (how very inconsiderate...) and a sneaky cat didnt help matters..... hoping for better this week with the return of good numbers.
Dave

isnt it nice to be still light at 7pm, feeling better already

Nice variance of bird images CC/BW, looks like you had a mixture of sun and rain, you did well to get the Jay on the feeding table.
Looks like the weather has taken a downward turn this week.... typical I am off work for a week!

Must do the decorating instead...

Its been raining here but I have a nice garden visit this morning:
2 female Reed Buntings..... :eek!: only ever had a single before today, they are both under the feeders.

A Wren and 2 Redpolls also :t:

oh and a Squirrel demolishing the sunflower seeds

I predict the Song Thrush should turn up with the ground wet again, there will be plenty of worms coming to the surface

Missing regulars today are: Robin, Dunnock, Redpoll, Coal tit

After the no show of the above from yesterdays garden watch this morning already the wrong has been put right....

2 Coal tits, 2 Dunnock, 3 Redpoll, 2 Robin :t: all showing well
The Coal tits are doing some planting for me. They are burying sunflower seeds in the hanging basket right outside the back door, litteraly only a few inches away.... I am getting quality views of these cuties.

It must have been to warm and dry for them yesterday!!

Nice photos, CC and BornWild.

Pretty quiet for birds in our yards. Squirrels are active, though. They destroyed another birdfeeder and squirrel baffle on the weekend. They've also found a way to reach one of the suet feeders - and they can empty it in hours. I don't know whether to hate them or to admire their ingenuity and persistence.

Have found part of a small plain white birds egg in the garden today, what would be hatching at this time?? what species has a white egg? The only place I can see it "falling from" is the garage roof...... and before you ask, it is definatly a birds egg and not part of this mornings fry up ;)

Any help appreciated
Cheers
Dave

Out for the evening but will catch up later, the suspense :eek!:

I'm a bit busy ATM, Dave, but I thought that I'd just answer your question:

Two species that I can think of are likely, Pigeons and Collard Doves; both have white eggs and breed pretty much all year round.

Now I'm away again.|=)|

Any number of species could be nesting at this time of year and the egg colour varies with individual birds as well as between species. What size was it? Do you have a picture?

Collared Diove would certainly be among my favourites for this egg. Other possiblities might be Blackbird or House Sparrow.

All 3 species are residents in the garden / roof of the house so all are likely candidates, will get a picture in the morning. It does remind me of last year when I found a fledged Housesparrow in the garage with the parents going frantic outside calling for it.... i will check the garage again just in case. Anyway I may have my first Juvenile of the year :t:

Beautifull pictures Azzy. They in your Garden? It looks as if you have a lovely place for them :)

Thanks, I need a camera with stronger zoom, but I get what I can. Yes, they are in the garden. The area in the photos is only a small rockery area with a pond, but I've been doing my best for the past year and a bit to plant it up with natives, things are starting to get to a decent size now and starting to flower which is nice. :) The small trees were already there though.

Love the Honeyeater, Azzy. Looks a bit like a Thrasher.

Yes, they are quite the little characters, lovely markings too.

What, may I ask, is that beautiful bird in the first pic with the rosey-peach coloured breast? A really stunning bird.

It really sounds like everyone's gardens have been so busy, it's wonderful. New garden species and plenty of regulars for everyone. I've got a grevilia that's developing flowers at the moment, so I'm hoping that it'll draw in an eastern spinebill. I'm not sure how it's going to know it's there, but one can hope. xD
