Had two Woodpigeons & 5 Goldfinch in the garden as I opened the curtains this morning, very nice. Spotted a Crow being mobbed by two Magpies in the centre of Leeds on the way to work, it dropped to within a few feet of peoples head showering feathers and hardly anybody noticed!

Some good garden sightings, seems they are as busy as ever, I think the rain is bringing them out here!

I had a Sparrowhawk mobbed by a Single Crow above the garden over the weekend... it was very aggresive... stooping and diving at it, couldnt help thinking that the Sparrowhawk was going to fight back and give the Crow a shock ;)

This morning:
2 LTTs (first for ages)
3 Canada Geese over
3 Redpoll
Lots of Blue, Coal, Great tit activity

No problem, I figured out the others. A really stunning bird to have in your garden. :)

they certainly are the females aren't as bright as the male but are much more bold in the way that they act. we have 2 pairs visit the garden both males sit in the tree looking for danger much of the time while the female feeds happily, then the male will jump down grab some thing and make a bolt for the tree again, all the time the female will have been hapily hopping round.

bull gold and greenfinch for us on the feeders this morning.

then went for a walk down the canal. saw a pair of dippers collecting nesting material, which was brilliant.

then i saw a pair one of the dippers flew down onto the river by the side of the canal. where i lost it mainly because i was watching a kingfisher investigating the bank for a nest site, which was joined by another one in it's investigation.

i've had worse days and all this because i'm climbing the walls having stopped smoking

That's quite funny, I've never really seen that sort of thing before. Why do males always have to be so high-strung? :p

B :)

JeffMoh, that Scissor-tailed flycatcher is to die for. What a stunner.

our males will fly off and hide from a determined coal tit it's quite funny to see at times considering the bullfinch is twice the size, they're the most timid things i've ever seen, the females on the other hand will stand their ground with most things.

the robin having abandoned his nest building for the last couple of weeks is back with a vengeance.

It really is an impressive bird, Azzy. They'll be around now until about November.

It's really getting interesting for birds here now, because migrants are arriving. Yesterday I did 20 minutes of birding at each of two local parks, plus 15 minutes around our campus. Ended up with a day list of exactly 50 species. Not at all bad for an hour or so of birding.

A couple of silly images

.... off eggs!!
As promised here is the said birds egg, I have added the large hens egg as an indication of how small the one found in the garden is.

All white and very small.... sorry there isnt much left of it. I have added the second image as it gives a better shape definition and thus indicates how small it is.

Jeff the Scissor-tailed flycatcher is awesome :t:
Peter glad to see you still have Siskins, I had zero siskins this winter in the garden and have only seen a single pair on my own local patch... great bird.

Today here the highlights are 3 Redpolls, 3 Canada geese over, 2 LTTs, Bullfinch pair... who were braving the rain and eating sunflower seeds instead of their normal nyger seed :eek!: and the day finished off with 2 Mallards over just before dark

Had a garden 1st earlier today, a nice male Hobby flying through at fence height!

Nice one :t: Thats very early.

Not much in our yards at present but saw a beautiful bird on my drive home yesterday: Scissor-tailed Flycatcher. Has to be one of the most stunning birds around.

Lovely to find Dippers and Kingfishers nesting. Not seen Kingfishers on my patch for sometime now.

Difficult to tell the size as it's only part of the egg but my guess would probably be Collared Dove. May be worth posting the pics on the id forum and see what else others think it could be.

i spent a couple of hours watching the siskin and goldfinch clinging for dear life to the nyger seed feeder this afternoon, really strong winds and driving sleet in aberdeenshire today but they were pretty determined! the feeder was almost horizontal yet still they clinged.

been a bit like that weather wise down here in Cheshire, driving rain for most of the day wind has been very blustery over the last few days. Another garden Siskin reported so well done.

I have been very lucky with the Redpolls this year, virtually everyday since November... would willingly swap one for a Siskin before the spring sets in properly :t:

i've only ever had lesser redpolls once in my garden and that was just a two minute stop then they moved on. so i'd happily swap with you, but not premanently as i kinda like my little siskins. :)
