Pretty sure I heard a mistletoebird in the backyard this morning, but when I turned to look, it was flying away. Really happy about that though, first one for the year :)

another year species for my garden:

No. 39 Goldcrest pair... I will be smiling all day now, mega pleased!!

Had a single for long periods last year now 2 have turned up, what a real treat. They have just flown to next doors huge conifers, hopefully they will start nest building and pop in on a daily basis.

another 6 Redpoll and a Wren are the other highlights from my 2 minute watch when I opened the curtains.

CC gadwall were lifers too! havent managed to see a few easy ones yet including Smew which have been fairly local to me over the winter.... lazy birdwatcher at the moment

*** update***
Bullfinch pair have flown in, male on the nyger female on the sunflower seeds, 2 Great tits and 4 Canada geese over

bull gold and greenfinch for us on the feeders this morning.

then went for a walk down the canal. saw a pair of dippers collecting nesting material, which was brilliant.

then i saw a pair one of the dippers flew down onto the river by the side of the canal. where i lost it mainly because i was watching a kingfisher investigating the bank for a nest site, which was joined by another one in it's investigation.

i've had worse days and all this because i'm climbing the walls having stopped smoking

Terrific sightings, cc, hang onto them in your hour of need! You will stop, have faith. It will get easier, and think to the future, when you really start to feel the benefit. It was the best thing I ever did-about 17 years ago. Dread to think what I'd be like now if I hadn't!

last time i stopped i spent 2 months having fights with inanimate objects, i was the most bad tempered person in britain, trouble is bornwild has stopped this weekend too so we may well kill each other by next week.

as for the birds nothing in the garden at the moment but i did see mr robin poking his beak out of the nest hole this morning.

despite my manflu i ventured into the snow to top everything up this morning and have had a pair of siskins taking full advantage alongside couple of goldfinches, robin, blackbird, woodpigeon, a pair of house sparrows, dunnock and of course chaffinches.

it's been a tough time for them all this winter, i was hoping it was all done with but alas we've had a few inches of snow in aberdeen today. seems to be easing a bit now and turning to rain so hopefully it'll melt quickly.

first wren of the year for me today. Exquisitly beautiful in a subtle way .It didn't stay long and unfortunately my single snatched shot turned out to be out of focus.

For the past 2x years we have had a noisy residental development going on at the front of the house and lots of birds and wildlife have unfortunately lost their nests and burrows. I hope we still have the thrushes nesting .

Haven't seen any badges this year so I'm hoping the builders haven't dozed their set:C

well done giving up CC . Eventually you will reach the point where you'll wish you'd done it sooner. Good luck

busy morning

Female Sparowhawk carrying off food from my garden a few minutes ago.

Is the breakfast Woodpigeon, Feral pigeon or Collared Dove?

Nothing going for me getting this shot... early morning poor light, camera shake, double glazing, 50 ft distance away and a flying raptor.... I did well :-O

already got 7 Redpolls on the feeders with a pair of Bullfinch

It's true, I quite like Pigeons
Unless the prey was half eaten, the clue is in the "carrying off", Dave. Even a female Sparrowhawk struggles to fly off with a Colly; I've never seen one carried more than a few yards, and that was quite a clumsy effort.

i'm still laid up with a rotten cold so able to monitor my feeders a bit today. a good start with 5 siskin , collared dove, wood pigeon, coal tit, 2 starling, chaffinch and 2 randy dunnock chasing each other through the bushes. chuffed with the collared dove as they're a rare visitor to my garden.

hoping for bullfinch again today and i've put out some apple to try and attract a few other birds but that'll probably just result in carrion crows or rooks. better day today though with just a little bit of snow left in the garden and the sun's out.

aye rooks are pretty cool. Peterculter, where I stay, is full of them as it's got a good smattering of small woodland in and around it for Rookerys. Some mornings it feels like an episode of the birds when i'm going for my bus. it's always an impressive sight.

Sparrowhawks are always impressive too, my parents get one which goes from garden to garden raiding the feeders in their street. I've yet to see one in my garden though it is good territory for them.

i might be getting a spotting scope delivered today, which will cheer me up and hopefully allow me to spot Red Kites and Buzzards from my back windows. If only I could attract these into my garden!

Wow, what a treat, a raptor in the backyard with a kill. I'd love to see that.

The usual action today, had the regular pair of magpie-larks drop by again, though they didn't stick around for long. Also noticed that the welcome swallows are either nest building under the neighbours verandah or they were hunting insects under there. Only time will tell. I get the feeling the neighbours won't appreciate it though ;)

Very atmospheric picture, Dave!

Beautiful weather here now but unfortunately little bird action in our yards. One good development is that a male Red-bellied Woodpecker has started visiting again. They were regulars but then stopped coming for months and months.

In the second photo you can see seeds flying as he whacks away at the feeder.

Well the Sparrowhawk has taken up residence in the conifers all day. I keep seeing her gliding past the window. The only birds brave enough to feed have been the Bullfinch pair (although the pouring rain hasnt helped). I cant see any feathers from the kill this morning so its still between Collared Dove & Feral pigeon that became breakfast, I really hope it wasnt one of the Collared Dove pair.

2 Long tailed tit and a Herring Gull are the other highlights of this afternoon

Dave
