Congratulations! Nice bird. We sometimes get (Red-breasted) Nuthatches in our yards but only in the winter.

At present our yards are dominated by House Finches, White-winged Doves, Blue Jays and Ruby-throated Hummingbirds. Also get frequent visits from individual Downy Woodpeckers, Northern Cardinals, Carolina Wrens, Carolina Chickadees etc and the occasional House Sparrow.

Other wildlife in our yards includes some super-sized hornets (nesting in a birdhouse), Gray and Fox Squirrels, Geckoes, and Green Anoles. We must have dozens of Tree Frogs - although I've never seen one, they beep and chirp constantly.

Very much the usual suspects here today, but I have excellent news in that one of our neighbours now has a nice new feeding station with four or five feeders in their front garden. Looks like they have a nice selection of different bird foods too.

Not posted in here for aaaages but thought I'd pop in and see what was going on in people's gardens. And, it looks like I'm not the only one to be enjoying new visits from Nuthatches! I had a great hour or so this morning when a Nuthatch (or possibly 2 different Nuthatches) came back and forth to the feeder. I managed to grab a couple of ropey record shots (see attached). It's only the second sighting of a Nuthatch in the garden in 5 years of watching so I was chuffed to bits. I hope it comes back....

The other delight of recent weeks has been the return of a little Coal Tit, feeding regularly.

I'm jealous regarding all the nuthatches, it's a another type of bird I never managed to see when I was in the U.S. Been having quite a bit of activity here with the eucalypt flowering, the rosellas and rainbow lorikeets have been right into it, however the red wattlebird keeps chasing them out, and then not even bothering to eat from it itself. So it's defending a food source it's not even using :p Nevermind, they still come back.

Suddenly I have masses of Greenfinches coming to the feeders, last year the numbers were down, 2008 a lot of these birds were sick. so, I'm going to clean the feeders every week and the bird bath. There are a lot of young birds about and they love the sunflower hearts. The Bluetits as usual outnumber all the species. A persistent Sparrowhawk comes through the garden I never hear it coming just this bird like a missile speeding across the garden.

I have mentioned before i have a very small garden but have twice now seen a Sparrowhawk appearing out of nowhere grab a Dunnock and off in the blink of an eye. Mixed feelings at the time but then i realise i am probably quite lucky (as a nature watcher in general) to witness the event.

Hi Andrew
I guess you could think of it this way - the Sparrowhawk has to eat whether you see it or not, so why not enjoy being able to witness an otherwise 'unseen' event ;). I've only had one Sparrowhawk attack in my very small garden but when it happened it was spectacular - made my week, lol. Wonderful looking birds. :t:

So true Hobbes but i only had the 2 regular Dunnocks so in a way i lost a friend. o:) Spectacular is a great word to describe the event though a very efficient hunter and turned on a sixpence (a silver coin worth two and a half pence in new money for younger forum members;)) to catch it's prey.:t:

Once during the summer when one came through the garden even the dog ducked. Anyway, I managed to see a Nuthatch in a friends garden to-day and I had my camera with me I always have great expectation where there is a wood close by.
Nuthatch and a Coal tit in one day, amazing.

Thanks for your compliment. I mentioned that I have a lot of healthy Greenfinches, I do only I saw one that is not, all round its beak it has red scabs on it, unfortunatly more than likely its highly contagious.

A nice little flurry of activity there CB, do you usually get them around this time of yr?

Blackcaps do seem to be regular in September. They feed on the Elderberry tree right near my window. Chiffchaffs generally pass through. Had quite a few in recent days mirroring good numbers on the Wirral coast. Willow Warblers are getting a bit late now. Its the first one i've had since mid summer though.

Where I am, I have only ever recorded chiffchaff in my garden and in the local wood, which is a 10 minute walk away, blackcap in the wood but not in my garden, YET! Also quite strange, in the 2 and a bit yrs I have been here, I have not had a single Willow Warbler at all. But if i go 2 miles or so up the road to denby village area, they are present, as are chiffchaffs.

Tawny Owls just been nice and vocal.
