Any ideas who or what has done this to my feeder, I put it in a local wood just to see what I would get, the first time I went back there was a Great Tit and I wasn't able to go back for a week and it was an old feeder but I say, really its ruined. Woody or squirrel? Little blighter whoever it is.:eek!::eek!: I forgot to put the photos the right way up.

:-O

I shouldnt laugh Shirley as these things cost money, but thats total carnage.

I had 3 squirrels yesterday.... one is missing its left front paw, one has tree burns to its left back leg and one just looks plain knackered.

Off topic slightly but for the 2nd night running, when arriving to work at 21.30hrs a Tawny has been calling very close by. :t:

So excited as we had a new garden visitor today, an eastern spinebill feeding on the nectar of the eremophila I planted a couple of years ago, now that's what I call success :D

Also had a few butterflies passing through today, managed to get some photos of some skippers. Otherwise, not too much activity in the garden today but I am stoked about the spinebill. Note the forehead covered in pollen ;)

Edit. Adding in an extra image, I know people have been asking about the mysterious mistletoebird, and I don't think I ever posted a photo. Just walked outside after eating dinner a minute ago and spotted this lovely fellow calling his heart out. Last of the evening light so poor image quality, plus they're such tiny birds (one of our smallest at only 10 or 11cm). What's interesting is it seemed like he was doing a bit of mimicry, I thought I heard starling, weebill, striated pardalote and new holland honeyeater. Quite the vocalist.

Forgot to mention, first two shots are Musk Lorikeets, third is the eastern spinebill, fourth is the male mistletoebird ;)

Just a quick post, missing this thread at the moment but there is just not a lot going on.

I did hear a Blackbird and Robin this morning and as we left the house 2 LTT's were flying over the garden with around a dozen BH Gulls circling overhead.

Azzy the birds you get in your garden are beautiful! :t:

A nice sight in the garden this morning - a Song Thrush pottering around in the leaf litter. Used to be a lot more common than they are now and always good to see

I really wish I had known about you folks during the summer when a pair of barn swallows made a nest on the light fixture on our garage. I have not seen barn swallows in our area for years and I got to watch as they built the nest, had their little ones and watched as they learned to fly and left the nest. I spent hours sitting in the dining room window with my binoculars every day. I was so excited but had no one to share this with because most people I know do not think birds are all that interesting.

I felt like a proud grandparent as those little babies left that nest and learned to fly. I miss them so much but understand that they will likely come back next spring to use the same nest. I will be anxiously watching for them and this time I will have people to share my excitement with.

Thats pretty brutal damage. I wonder if the Squirrels knocked it to the ground then something else trashed it trying to get inside it.

I totally agree.

For the British birders on here, Aldi are selling a load of garden bird stuff from Sunday 24th including several feeders and bird food. The globe feeder at £2.99 looks quite interesting. May have to take a look at it.

Swallows, I had a pair of Swallows nesting in a shed and the nest was on a pull switch resting on a tiny piece of wood. To make life a bit more simple last winter and to encourage other pairs I put 6 artificial nests in a large animal shed, spaced them apart and open the top of the door day and night. The Swallows arrived and guess what she went straight back to the flimsey nest built it a bit bigger and had three broods. As we live near the village pond which is huge I was expecting as least one pair, nothing nested in any of the artificial nests.

I was wondering if I should put up some kind of shelf in case the little ones want to make nests there as well. I guess I won't bother...lol

A very blustery afternoon today, so I hibernated with a cuppa and the bins|=)|

I was watching a Chaffinch and noticed that it had a ring on its leg - first wild bird I've noticed with one. I then saw lots of birds overhead so retreated upstairs to have a better look. The first one I got a good enough look at had those tell-tale red wings, a Redwing (Garden first) and then others looked bigger with a darker tail tip. After much patience I managed to follow one long enough to confirm it was a Fieldfare.

A well spent afternoon.:king:

Yes well done Bongo. I had a single Redwing over a few days ago. Goyter (Jeff) had a Song Thrush as well, so the signs are picking up of a change in birds visiting gardens now.

In contrast it was miserable and very quiet here this afternoon, just small numbers of finches but tits but still 6 Coal tits busying away

Cheers guys. When is someone going to invent auto-focus bins for these flyovers!

Great pics, Dave, esp the Nuthatch, Greenfinch, Blue Tit combo. Is that black sunflower seeds in the feeder? Do you get much mess with them?
