Just a suggestion on fast growing "shrubs" for next year that you could plant close to the house and the birds can use as cover would be rose bushes. There are so many varieties to choose from with all the hybrids you could prob find some that would get quite bushy and be beautiful too. I have quite a few rugosas growing wild and I always see the birds hanging out in them, plus the thorns are a nice deterrent to cats ;)

thanks for the suggestion. I have to say that I am not particularly partial to roses especially a huge one planted in the middle of my lawn lol;)

I think that I will be looking to plant something that will look more in place like a dwarf tree ....Acer or Ceonosis etc :t:
Not too worried about cats personally. I have two of my own and the number of birds they catch per year is less than 3 between them. I can't say the same about the local vole and mouse populations though :-C

Sounds like a good plan :t:

Just braved the elements to refill the seed and peanut feeders under torch light. Plenty of action going on even though its been snowing all day.
The new feeder is working as it should be.

Got home at lunchtime today just in time for the birds. (They always seem to come for lunch at 12:30.) In 6 minutes I saw:

2 Red-bellied Woodpeckers
2 White-winged Doves
2 Carolina Chickadees
6 House Finches
1 Downy Woodpecker
1 Northern Cardinal
1 Northern Mockingbird
1 Pine Warbler
1 Orange-crowned Warbler.

It probably helps that it's cold today (max. 10C). It's going to warm up again but one weather forecast says snow is likely Wednesday next week! Another forecast says next Wednesday will be 20-25C, though, so who knows!

Birds and bushes

Hi.

Lots of birds on feeders today 09.35am. Filled feeders and nut hangers and fat balls. Satrlings, Robin, chaffinches, sparrows, blue tit, great tit and female blackbird all diving in for the food. Currantly have 7 inches of snoe in back garden.

Regarding bushes. Last year i planted three contonester bushed that i got from Morrisons for £1.99 each. One has grow like a triffid and has loads of red berries. The other two slowly catching up but no berries this year. The black bird is taking loads of them.

Wish i had a camera with a zoom lens or a scope to digiscope

Must dash to make some more fat cakes. ready for the next few days.

Enjoy the birds.

Well the snow has certainly hit us now. I topped up the feeders I could get to and they could not wait. Trees and bushes were full of waiting birds, pity I am not there to watch them. Had to dig out the drive this morning, 100 yards long but we managed most of it and flattened the rest. Whether we can get back again is a different matter, might have to walk up from the village.

My feeders are very busy today, both nut and seed feeders, and the fat balls. It's hard to tell what's there, but it looks mostly like Sparrows and Blue Tits.

There's some clearing up the ground fall from the seed feeder as well.

Those fat balls must as hard as rocks, with it being -4C outside this morning.

Well had to come home from work before we got snowed in (nightmare journey home!) but it's given me chance to top up and clear the snow off the feeders.

The birds were waiting in the trees and were on the food the second I walked away! Blue Tits, Great Tits (haven't seen the Coal Tit so far), Magpie, about 8 Goldfinch, the same with Sparrows, Starlings, Dunnocks, Robin and 2f & 1m Chaffinch.

Expecting still more snow as the day goes on so i'll be clearing the feeders non stop!

Warrington Lancs
We dont tend to get much snow in Warrington (although last year was some of the worst in the UK) so my sympathies to those suffering (Dysneynut & Spinnygal etc).
Got this Nuthatch in at the week-end. Dull day so best I could do was 1/200th but it shows up well.
Lots of Tits but for some reason very few LTT's.
1 Bull Fich for a few moments
LOADS of Blackbirds.....never seen so many.
Squirrels seem to have disappeared (sure they dont hibernate-do they ?)
A Wren (maybe 2) and a few Goldfinches.......where have they gone??

This morning there were at least 6 Blackbirds waiting for the food to be put out, then they were joined by finches and tits but no sign of LTT's. There were a couple of Robins and Sparrows as well. I am setting off for home shortly due to the weather they probably will be all gone by the time I get there. I don't get Starlings or rarely.

Lovely Nuthatch pics.
