Very busy at the bird feeder today! (1 Viewer)

Bananafishbones

Incoherently Rambling .....
Still got a couple of Brambling here.

No Spring migrants in the garden yet but Yellowhammers reached a high of 28 this evening. They have been increasing day by day for the last week. Lewis

Wonderful! :t:

Very damp and blustery this morning so the 4 Redpolls are a little mobile and twitchy everytime a gust blows the trees. Large numbers of Greenfinch and the Goldfinch numbrers are increasing by the day

Hmmm... possible Arctic Redpoll on the feeders a few minutes ago, it could be the same bird that I deliberated a few days ago.
I have grabbed a few images... will download after work later,

It certainly is alot lighter than the Mealy that I am used to seeing, not as bulky... maybe slightly smaller but it was on its own so nothing immediatly to compare next to, but will need to compare images later on.

worse case scenario it will at least be yet another Mealy to visit my feeders, which would be the 3rd

It's like water off a duck's back!

It's later. ;)

The Yellowhammers are back for the first time since the snow, or maybe I've been too busy working to notice them. Two female Reed Buntings as well recently and a very unexpected garden tick - a pair of flyover Oystercatchers kleeping away! I may have to dig a pond...

Bananafishbones

Incoherently Rambling .....
2011 Garden Species No. 43
Female Kestrel
Through the garden

Also 3 Mallard over

update
Didnt have time to elaborate on this before.

A very rare occurance to see a Kestrel over the garden, although if I go over to the local driving range about a mile away I can guarantee them. About the same time as the Kestrel flew through the garden, about tree height, 3 Mallards circled very close by... looking aggitated, I doubt the Kestrel would disturb the Mallards so I wonder if something disturbed all the birds???

Anyway a great sighting for moi on my garden patch

I had a reed bunting in the garden yesterday but haven't seen a robin for 2 weeks.Something else i've noticed is the pair of blue tits who are checking one of my 5 nestboxes out are taking to chasing the goldfinches out of the garden. Is this normal ? The other thing is when do blue tits start building their nests ?

Pair of bullfinches have been around most of the day today, as well as the great tits.

The great tits have been feeding and collecting, must be a nest being built nearby. Last year they brought 6 chicks to the feeders to show them the ropes, that would be nice again this year :t:

Any idea if cut oranges would attract any visitors ?

My girlfriend likes oranges and I like apples, opposites attract you think ?!?!

Will maybe put one out and see what happens, easy enough to stop doing it.

I have plenty of feeders in my garden and have regular Blue, Coal, Great and Long-tailed Tits, Goldfinch, Starlings, Blackbirds and a single Robin who bless him has been singing his heart out none stop for the last few weeks and seeing off the Dunnocks and House Sparrows as he marks out his patch. I bought my first garden nestbox a couple of days age and placed it in my only tree. I was delighted to see a Blue Tit having a look this morning so fingers crossed.:t::t:
