I have to say I don't get many pigeons but I do get huge flocks of Jackdaws and Crows or Ravens, big black horrors. They demolish the food like no tomorrow.

Had a visit from the Green Woodpecker again today. Not on the food just on the fence, but I did see it clearer because I was just shutting the gate after getting the car out of the drive. No camera though.

Happy birthday BFB! B :) Hope you have a great one! And to everyone else who has a birthday today of course!

The bullfinch has just made my day, taking sunflower hearts from the feeders up top today rather from on the ground. Plus the usual regulars, the goldfinches and sparrows, (goldfinches outnumber sparrows now) blue tits, collared doves, woodpigeons and dunnock.

Happy birthday BFB from me tooB :)B :)B :)

When I left for work this morning there was a big thud on the window. I looked out the back for a casualty but there was nothing to be seen. Unfortunately when I came home I saw a dead Song Thrush at the front of the house:-C They're one of my favourite garden visitors, so its a real shame and I haven't seen one here since early spring.

I'm always at a loss what to do with the bodies. I used to put them in the bin, but I suppose they would make a good meal for a fox? (btw, I've checked for a ring, but nothing).

What a real shame... Intresting idea thou about the food for a fox. I used to put dead birds in the garden bin (away from cats TBH) but may rethink... I dont think there is a right way or wrong way

Still sad all the same

I ended up putting it in the bin. I was concerned about disease spreading to the local cats, especially as the body had been there all day. It's been confirmed as a juvenile:

Roger I have no issue with Sparrowhawks and they present no problem at all to me. I was merely touching on a subject based on feelings I had sensed or comments I had heard from certain sectors. No debate? Fine.

Steve,
what would you do about the "sparrowhawk problem",(indeed if there is one)i would be very interested in your views please?

I guess you missed that. Maybe if you started a separate thread you might get more of a debate going - it is after all pretty well hidden in here!

to be perfectly honest,i don't think you will get a debate on the garden birds thread, everybody that gets these birds in there garden are very happy to see them, apart from the odd one or two,i do understand though, your comments, maybe though for another thread.

Just had an hour of the heaviest kind of downpour ..... anyway shortly after, it has now brought 20+ Swifts out along with a lone Swallow

This morning I had a try to count the Housesparrows..... got into the 20s before they flew in all directions! Lots of recent fledglings though

OK, point taken! I'll be off and drag my sorry debate into someone else's garden! |:$|

A bit late, but a Happy birthday from me too Dave!. I have been sidetracked a lot from this thread due to a concentrating on a photographic project.

So as I have not been around properly, I shall do a bit of an update.

My 2 latest fly over additions being Oystercatcher and Common Tern were 2 surprises to the garden list, which were a case of right place and the right time. Juvenile wise not many this year at all. My bluetits in my box I believe fledged 2, but there were 5 in the box that didn't make it. There was a magpie that flew up on top of the box quite often so I think that may well be the reason. Only 3 other species with juveniles have been noted in my garden, Great Tit being the strongest with between 8 and 12 juvenile birds been feeding away. 1 Juv Robin and 1 Juv Dunnock. Throughout the months most species have remained pretty much the same as the previous year, although I have still not seen any wrens in the garden at all, and i have also noticed a lack of them between here and my daughters school this year also. Heard a Coal Tit the other day, they have been in for a while. The Bullfinches though keep putting an appearence in with upto 2 pairs gracing my hawthorns.
At the moment I have had to take the feeders down as my feeding station needs resetting in the ground, it has gone all lose so will be cementing it in soon. And I must try and find a way of deterring the squirrels! The amount they have eaten this season is just plain ridiculous.
So once I have that done hopefully birds will be pleased with with me once again, they are already looking for it!
