Incoherently Rambling .....
a couple of Redwings with all the usual suspects, still pretty miserable weather wise each day seems like dusk with the ever darkening clouds

23 goldfinches and 12 greenfinches, house sparrows continue in numbers, chaffinches, blue and coal tits, blackbirds, collard doves, the highlights this morning.just wondering if anybody has seen or had any bramblings in there garden?

Bananafishbones

Incoherently Rambling .....
No. 27 Canada Goose
No. 28 Herring Gull

Still pretty slow here with nothing unusual and apart from a bumper day last week with 37 Redpoll the numbers settled at around 15 birds on the feeders everyday.

Havent had a Brambling for well over a year now. The Thrushes especially the Fieldfare have gone missing from the area, its still amazingly mild and frost free - great for birds, bad for garden birdwatchers ;) .

Does this current weather bode well for a nice summer.

I think the RSPB's Big Garden Watch at the end of the month could see some big drops in numbers of birds.

Due for a bitr colder weather this weekend.

Numbers of the garden winter visitors notably Brambling and Fieldfare have been well down in my area and Redwing numbers are lower than normal.

and of course we have our counts from last year (around pages 276,277) to make comparisons, I know I had a hard frost on the day I did my count.

CB are you going to re-kindle the seperate thread you started? would be good for an overall comparison if the contributors added 2012 results.

Been away for a while (been busy moving home) so a belated Happy New Year to all! Anyway, my new garden (which needs a lot of work) is far more bird/wildlife friendly than the last (hedges, conifers, birch, ivy etc), neighbor is even a keen birder and gardener!
As such I already having a steady influx of birds namely Blue and Great tit, robin (extremely territorial), wren, dunnock and blackbird. Not a starling in sight (amazing how you miss them), unfortunately the goldfinches are also completely absent! Neighbor reckons Finches are a rarity (but I'm convinced that is due to the bird food he puts out) but I'm determined to get them visiting. I'm only a mile or so away from my old house, which regularly saw 20 plus a day, so I know they are in the area! Had a Garden first the other day as 6 long-tailed tits feasted on the suet!!!

Yes. I will do a thread for comparison with 2010. Probably set that up over the weekend.

still the usual in my garden goldfinches chaffinchs blackbird starlings collored dove, wood pigeon, great tit, blue tit robin, etc
just couple questions guys after some advice
I am now feeding the birds with Niger seed and sunflower hearts which they love, the finches are making a mess of the grass seeds everywhere, can anyone recommend some feeders which will hold and catch fallen seeds etc, looked in my local range nothing suitable.stopped putting fat balls out for same reason, just didn't want diseases spreading everywhere, grass ruined,it's new build so grass and turf don't drain properly holds water.also I put wild bird sees mixed in feeders and peanuts the birds don't touch it unless in tray.

Spring is in the air here already with 2 robins and 2 wrens courting :t:

I have been told that the sparrowhawk I posted photos of on the previous page is a male but no explanation yet for his funny eye!

Numbers are down here also with no unusuals.
