At last our first juvenile Greenfinch seen this morning with proud but watchful Dad. Gradually building up a library of juvenile bird images :t:

Looks like only the one offspring so far but its the first that our only pair of Greenfinches have had for 2 years now .

Difficult to know how many birds our resident Sparrowhawks are taking .

Great Tits are common in the garden here. Not sure why photographers don't favour them; I think they have quite a good personality and variable plumage too.

Sad news this evening. I went out to clean the feeders, top them up and wash the bird bath. Stupid me has put the bird bath back on its pedestal a bit too hard and smashed it:C Looks like a trip round the garden centres tomorrow for a replacement.

Peewit

Once a bird lover ... always a bird lover
I see no sign of any birds other than Wood Pigeon who love a good wash and a bath of their own.

The bird baths are brimming with water at the moment...but no birds

Bongofury: hope that the bird bath is not too expensive! :eek!:

Kathy

Plenty of birds around the garden feeders at present including blue tits, greenfinches, chaffinches, dunnocks, goldfinches, bullfinches, starlings, robins, great tits, coal tits,(all adults and juveniles)collared and turtle doves,(ground feeding),wood pigeons.
No lake with mallards or dunlins in,all nice and sunny and dry at moment, mind you summer could return anytime with more rain.

Bananafishbones

Incoherently Rambling .....
I have 2 pairs of Woodpigeon in the garden, one pair roosts in next doors front garden and one pair in my back garden. Upto now no juveniles. They are both courting again so hopefully second time lucky.

I know that the back garden pair nest in the same tree as the Magpie pair, so I guess the eggs were pinched some while ago

Sparrow squad are still dominant here in EK, hardly make it back indoors before the seed feeder seems empty again ! Numbers are sticking between 20 and 30, switching between the feeders and the hawthorn behind them, making a proper count difficult lol.

We have a juvenile blue tit fighting against them valiantly, only ever seen it by itself, no adult supervision. Still a lot of yellow plumage, not sure how young it actually is.

Adult great tit with either one or two young in tow is appearing sporadically, see if they becomg regulars or not.

GSW is fast becoming a regular, which really makes me smile :t: Fairly certain it's a juvenile as well, as it has a lot of red on it's crown, as opposed to adult pictures I've seen where the red is mainly to the back of the head.

And in the last 15 minutes, a collared dove flew on to the top of the feeding pole, then flew off again. But that still counts right ? |;|

I found it for £40 in a garden centre that had a sale on. I have never seen one as cheap, so its the cost of a replacement that will be the problem.

Dippers and Heron probably :-O

He's probably had them on flyovers;)

Sounds good for a juvenile to me:t:

The mixed seed is getting really popular with the Sparrows at last - 2 females together on the feeder this morning. Steady progress...!

I think I'm going to invest in another feeder and put white millet in to try and increase the number of Sparrows visiting. Can anyone recommend a good online place to get it? I'll probably go for around 20kg to start with, I'm sure the squirrels will eat it, even if nothing else does.

I'm just using Morrisons seed mix, £1.59 for a 2kg bag.

Sparrows absolutely devour it.

Woodpecker and collared dove both around again today, although never saw the dove actually feed, was watching from the tree.

Hopefully another couple of recce missions and it will try it's luck !

You could well be in luck EB took some this afternoon, however laptop is going in for repair so will be a few days before I can upload any.usb ports have stopped working.

Had that same problem with my PC a couple of years ago, ended up having to reinstall Windows, pain in the proverbvial !!

On the birding front, Woodpecker, Wood Pigeon and house sparrows were all enjoying breakfast before I left for work, as well as a pair of Herons flying overhead.

Girlfriend also saw a Sparrowhawk sitting in the trees on the way to the station.

Well its pretty quiet in the garden today surprisingly enough. There have been the usual regulars the Goldfinch pair and their 2x young the Coal Tit pair and their 2x young the Blue Tit pair and their single offspring a few Hedge and House Sparrows and thats about it !

Seems very strange not to hear the intense squabbling of the 8-10 juvenile Starlings we have had every day for weeks now, or the noisy cackling of 12+ juvenile and parent Jackdaws . No Collared Doves No Woodpigeon No Blackbirds Where on earth have they all gone ?

A small poll.;)

Sitting here in the kitchen listening to the gentle enquiring sssssseeeep of the Goldfinches before they come down to the sunflower heart feeders I realise that they are without question my favourite birdsong if you can call a single repeated cheep a birdsong ? such a gentle call for quite an aggressive bird

Whats your favourite birdsong and why ?
