A small poll.;)

Sitting here in the kitchen listening to the gentle enquiring sssssseeeep of the Goldfinches before they come down to the sunflower heart feeders I realise that they are without question my favourite birdsong if you can call a single repeated cheep a birdsong ? such a gentle call for quite an aggressive bird

Whats your favourite birdsong and why ?

simple one for me

Blackbird - have spent many hours in the evenings with a chilled beer listening to a dozen or so singing from every roof top in our close.... and I still chuckle when they get to the bit that sounds just like R2D2

Probably Red-winged Blackbirds, Dave. Used to hear them everywhere we went in California. Now I'm lucky to hear them almost every day at work.

Please can I be greedy and have 2, EB?;) First, Curlew out on the moors, an evocative sound that reaches parts other sounds can't! Then, Turtle dove, the soft persistent purring such a 'delicate' sound. I can't choose between them, I'm afraid!

lol

I spent 2-3 hours at Lakenheath last year... looking into the same copse of trees and not once did I see the bird even move, yet I heard it sing to the left, the right, up high, further down, damn it was so frustrating, then as we left 50 or so other birders to carry on the vigile it fleetingly popped out high up in a bunch of trees on the way back to the visitors centre 200yrds from where we had all been stood :t:

My garden birds

Hi guys and gals,
Always been a Pudsey lad, but as of last August moved up to Gildersome.Been here 10 months now and have started to build up some numbers of birds. Noteably over the last fortnight ive had a pair of siskins, female greater spotted woodpecker and an ever increasing colony of House sparrow. All the other 'usuals' with big numbers of Goldies/Greenies and Chaffs. A pair of Bullies are popping in now and then.
Cant wait to do some moth trapping to see whats up here, but alas the weather has put the dampeners (sorry about the pun) on that !:t:

Welcome to the thread. I used to stay in East Ardsley and worked in Morley up til 2005. Lots has happened since then...

Siskins continue to visit here too, 5 this afternoon, although one of the neighbours' predators had a gob full of yellow / white feathers so I fear for one of them.

cleaning the bird bath has to be one of my least favourite jobs. ;)
I swear the woodpigeon wait until they drink before pooing in the water.

Biggest problem we have at the moment is algae and moss its everywhere. Its so damp down our lane that we have ferns growing everywhere and you know how hard they are to grow :-O

Our hearts and nijer feeders are getting very wet also and I have just cleaned all those too. I wondered if anyone has found a solution to keeping the rain off and also collecting the hearts that fall out the feeder onto the ground?

I thought I might try to make some clear plastic discs for the top of the feeders and find some circular plastic plant pot trays to attach to the bottom of the feeders to collect the hearts and seed that fall .

:t: How's your year garden list doing compared to last year?

Good views of a Wren this morning trying to workout what a garden feeder is.

White Millet went out yesterday evening. No takers yet, but the weather has been rubbish.

I think I was 3 better off this time last year where I had had (I think that is actualy a legal had had I put in there :t:) Kestrel, Curlew and Chiffchaff, but I have snook in a Tufted Duck on this years list.

2011 July = 54
2012 July = 52

3 days to Turkey - cant flippin wait now :smoke:

Have targeted upto 20 but in reality 12 would be more than welcome.

Hope you have a great time there, Dave. Which part(s) are you going to?

We're off on vacation on Sunday, too. Not as exotic, though. A week in southwest Utah, including Zion National Park. Doubt if I'll see any lifers.

well we had a total of 8x goldfinches today ! ...the most ever.
Four adults and 2x pairs of juveniles one newish and the other pair looking very scruffy and just starting to get their red heads.

Went to Ham Wall on the Somerset levels Sunday and saw a Black Backed Gull eat a Coot chick whole :eek!: and lots of frogs (extremly noisy ) , lots of Cormorant . A huge Great Crested Grebe and wait for it a Marsh Harrier ! my first sighting ever.

If you are anywhere near i recommend you spend a day at the RSPB Ham Wall reserve and the adjacent Shapwick. A photographers and bird watchers paradise
