Is this your Sanderling?
First Woodpigeon in several weeks this week. Tend to just get Feral and Collared Dove. Decent Greenfinch count of 3 as well. Tend to get 1, if that. Siskins and Goldfinch still about in number (peaks of 5 and 14 respectively).

I wholeheartedly recommend joining up to the BTO's Garden Birdwatch survey to anyone with the time. There's no minimum time per week to be spent monitoring, so long as you're consistent week-on-week.

Adult male and juvenile male GSW still both visiting. Normally the juveniles have dispersed by now.

Siskins still 20+. A couple of Goldfinches and a couple of Starlings. Also 2 foxes mid afternoon and increasing amounts of badger [email protected] on the lawn.

yesterday afternoon a young (and very sodden) male Sparrowhawk sat in the Oak at the rear of the garden for nearly an hour.... it wasnt well hidden and I could see it well enough so I guess every bird in the neighbourhood must have seen it well enough.

It eventually flew off when diner didnt turn up for it.

I need your expert opinion guys and gals on a Goldfinch but first....

We have had infrequent lone greenfinch for the past year or so . Although we have seen a pair on the feeders at the same time, we haven't noticed any juvs yet .
Anyway a couple of weeks ago we had a very poorly greenfinch (our third in recent years) he was down on the ground just crouching there for ages . he looked lethargic and fluffed up and was clearly not well.

After about 10 mins he flew with difficulty to a bird bath and tried to drink but didn't seem to be having much luck. I lost sight of him half hour later .

At first I suspected it could have been Trichomonosis but now I'm wondering if it could have just been plain old food poisoning :-C I have just reported it to BTO http://www.bto.org/volunteer-surveys/gbw/gardens-wildlife/garden-birds/disease/trichomonosis

I must admit in our recent house move this past 2x months we have been incredably busy and not cleaned the feeders and birdbaths as often as we should have. I'm now wondering how many other birds we have made ill because of our negligence.

Part of the problem is that the sustained and torrential rain lately has washed a lot of seed out of the trays and feeders into the undergrowth where many small birds are now feeding . Its easy pickins and less hassle from other birds on the feeders above.

I hope that this might prove a timely reminder to all of us about the importance of cleanliness of the feeders and birdbaths and particularly reducing the amount of seed on the ground under the feeders

Looks sick doesnt it - I guess only you could at the time see if if was acting lethargic or not. I guess as Goldfinch are a social species to the Greenfinch it maybe more susecptable to catching trichomonosis, although I have yet to see one myself

not looking at all ill or lethargic and eating like a horse all this week. ? ;)
I reckon its either got a huge growth or its egg-bound in which case it won't last long.:-C

The Downy and Red-Bellied Woodpeckers are still frequent visitors.

Ruby-Throated Hummingbirds have also been very regular visitors for the past couple weeks during their southward migration.

All three members of the mimid family now show up, too, though Mockingbirds are still rare visitors. Brown Thasher has some proper feathers again (he was looking very ragged for a while during molting). Multiple Catbirds, too.

The ever-curious Chickadees have grown in number again.
