Incoherently Rambling .....
Good stuff happening in our gardens and yards now, sadistically I really do like winters in the garden.

Hi Mostyn. Welcome to BirdForum. Whereabouts in Wales are you? From Neath here.Hi everyone,
I'm a new guy; just signed up to your community; and I also love the garden birds that empty our feeders as quick as we replenish them. We have almost all the species of birds mentioned; and some not! recently had a nut hatch and a tree creeper; but they seemed to have disappeared in the last week or so; also the woodpeckers have gone in the last couple of weeks. I'm so pleased to have found this forum; I really enjoyed reading through lots of your posts. Goss hawk, Sparrow Hawk and Peregrine Falcons can be fatal to the wood pigeons and similar sized birds, we have quite a number in this area, and although I love seeing them; it always makes me cringe, when I see them take a bird so quickly. Hey, not to mention a regular Putty-tat visitor .. I'm now going to read more of the posts on this forum.
Regards
M

Hi Mostyn. Beautiful part of the world there. Might try for the Great Grey Shrike at Garwnant again soon.Hi Rich,
Just outside Merthyr Tydfil alongside the river just below the Beacons.
put a post on this forum for recommendations of Binoculars? I have some old version bins I bought 20, years ago at an Argos store. looking for a new lightweight set, not too expensive. What do you use?

I used to use an old pair of Nikon porros which lasted many years. For my 40th though my OH bought me a pair of used Leica 8x42 Trinovids. Recently I added a Hawke Spotting Scope as I regularly go birding on the coast and many were just too far for me to ID. I'd keep an eye on the For Sale section here as quite often some good pairs come up.

Good luck with your choice Mostyn. There's plenty of great advice on this forum. In case you're interested the Great Norther Diver is still at Llwyn-Onn Reservoir. Thanks Rich,
looking at maybe a pair of 8x30 or 8x32 a quality pair but not too expensive.
I actually rather like collared doves, and certainly not stupid - they're fiercely loyal birds, protecting their partners and kiddywinks from other collared doves and, especially, magpies. I wouldn't want to upset one - they're very tetchy things : I've had one raise its wing at me (classic 'back off' gesture) on more than one occasion.
Now woodpigeons. They are dumb. They are the clowns of the woodland bird world- they never fail to make me laugh - incredibly clumsy, and with the bendiest neck known to mankind....
My first wintering blackcaps have arrived and are tucking into the fastballs.
Chris.
