Here we go again with another year list. I don't expect to come close to 2010's total of 781 but we'll have to see what happens with travel this year.

For comparison purposes I'll update this post with the number of species seen by country.

As of Dec 31 the total for 2011 stands at 793.

2011 starts as 2010 finished with a family holiday back to Australia. The first birds of the day were whilst having a coffee in my parent's backyard.

After the first few warm sunny days since arriving in Australia the nearby strawberry farm had strawberries so as promised to my son that was the first thing to do for the day. The following were seen on the drive to/from/at the farm.

A morning walk to the Wauchope horse racing track yielded some more of the common local birds.

Jan 4, Long Reef and Dee Why Beach, Sydney

The plan for today was to spend some time at Long Reef and nearby Dee Why Beach and Lagoon. Heading to Long Reef initially the tide was to high to allow walking out onto the reef however with threatening storm clouds and a high wind there were plenty of seabirds about. Predominantly Wedge-tailed Shearwaters but the highlight was a single Buller's.

Firstly thanks to the person who ranked this thread since my last post.

My first foray into the central catchment for 2011 was fairly quiet with common birds until I'd pretty much finished my couple of hours when two of the very rare resident Scarlet Minivets flashed overhead and landed just visible atop a tall tree - new for not only 2011 but my Singapore list.

We'd arrived in Chiang Mai late the previous evening for a week's family holiday which just happened to cover several of the more important birding areas of northern Thailand. The first year birds were seen whilst getting breakfast and waiting for the rental company to deliver a car to our hotel.
