Vienna Long Weekend (1 Viewer)

Going to be having a long weekend in Vienna at the end of the month and just wanted to see if anyone had any experience with wildlife watching there?

It's not going to be a wildlife trip but will probably do some walks around parks and such and wondering if anyone has any specific spot suggestions for any of the following:

Black Woodpecker
Middle Spotted Woodpecker
White-backed Woodpecker
Ural Owl

Eurasian Beaver
Eurasian Hamster

Fire Salamander

There's a few other outliers which are technically possible like Eagle Owl, Saker, Stone Marten etc which would be amazing to see but seem statistically improbable, but if anyone knows to the contrary I wouldn't say no!

There's quite a few threads on here with hamster information,

All the mentioned Woopeckers (and more) and Ural Owl can be found in Lainzer Tiergarten. White-backed Woodpecker is rare though. And the Ural Owls are from a reintroduction program (so not category A). Only in the very south of Austria you can find wild Ural Owls.

If you want to stay more central in Vienna: Black Woodpecker and Middle Spotted Woodpecker can be found in the bigger parks (with forests). I would recommend the forested areas in Prater for example.

Hamsters: Cemetery Meidling or Vienna Central Cemetery

Beavers: Lobau, New Danube (oxbow lakes) --> dusk, dawn, night best time of day

Fire salamanders: near small streams in the Vienna Woods (right weather necessary --> rain)

Stone Marten: sometimes you see them at night in Vienna (running from car to car)

Saker: in the steppe-like habitats in and around Vienna you can sometimes see them (saker-info.at)

All the best
