Belated Birthday wishes John - hope you had a good 'in :t:

Has anyone purchased the "Where to watch birds in the West Midlands" book? If so, is it a worthwhile investment, or can the internet provide as much info if one knows where to look?

Yes most definitely worth purchasing:t:

Good for those little known areas with maps and information. My three most useful and valued guides are:

Best Birdwatching Sites in Norfolk (2nd Ed) by Neil Glenn;
Where to Watch Birds in the West Midlands by Harrison, Coney, Gribble, Griffiths & Winsper;
Where to Watch Birds in Britain by Harrap & Redman.

Internet good especially for updates as books are soon out of date but difficult to find some locations.

Hi Pete, I've borrowed a book from Solihull Library called 'Where to Watch Birds in Herefordshire, Shropshire, Warwickshire, Worcestershire & The Former West Midlands County' from the same series. Quite informative, but the maps could be a bit more detailed. They also have 'Where to Watch Birds in Britain' and other books in that series :t:

I had a walk along the old road at Marsh Lane yesterday evening and was intrigued to watch two LBB Gulls mob and harry a Buzzard for several minutes. The Buzzard seemed to be carrying something. Initially, I could hear a gull and then the buzzard appeared flying low and fast (it had some missing tail feathers iving it a Kite like apprearance btw), with one LBB swooping down at it. They chased around for about a minute before both heading off over Meriden Road with the gull still in pursuit. I continued down the lane only for the same Buzzard to return, now pursued by two LBBs, three or four minutes later. It seems remarkably persistent of the gulls for food stealing but I have assumed LBBs don't nest nearby (we have a few nests on warehouses in Berkshire). Otherwise, there was a second Buzzard that took flight from near the cottages, Lapwings have dispersed into the horse/cattle fields, plenty of young birds about and a constant ballet of hirundines and Swifts in all directions!
One fresh Red Admiral as well.
