Went to Brandon Marsh this morning.Went all round the woods and saw very little but had better luck in the Carlton Hide where there were 5 Green Sandpipers and best of all a KF was fishing off the perching poles.

Love the last shot Max :t:

Have they lowered the water level now? Was too deep or something, recently, whenever I had been there.

Hi Pete,

Yes they have lowered the water level in front of the Carlton hide and it now looks ideal for waders.Let's hope something good pays a visit.

...king rubbish, to be exact. I'm like a crap plate spinner when it comes to golf. Just when I think I've mastered one plate spinning, the others that had been fine the week before, all come crashing down.

Ah well, back to 'togging!

As no-one's replied to my last message, am I right in assuming that there was nothing unusual about the mating cranes in the YouTube video? When I posted the link, I thought that perhaps they might be nesting somewhere secret near to where they'd mated (i.e. somewhere in or near Worcestershire).

Went across to Draycote Water this morning to find it very hot and to be greeted by several million insects that all seemed to want to eat me.Those little chaps Thunder Flies ? are a real pain.

I was lucky to bump into Bob Hazell who put me onto the 4 Yellow Legged Gulls that were off the Farborough Bank.Didn't see anything else of interest allthough a flock of 300+ LBB Gulls dropped in.

Some Gull pics attached some of (I hope) the YL Gulls but not all.

Hi Matt, as far as I know (ie according to Birdguides) there were three at Longdon Marsh for a couple of days and they all flew off on the afternoon of 21st April. I suspect Cranes have recently expanded their breeding range in England, but not necessarily in Worcs.

Drove down to the Flashes after work this evening, in the hope that I might get a reasonable shot of the greenshank; a bird which seems to evade my lens!

Well, it still has, as it stayed in the middle of the lake. Bah!

Also about where some stock doves, dunlin, common terns, green sandpipers, avocets, LRPs (a couple seem to scurry about on the far side now), curlew, buzzards, lapwings etc and some very noisy bh gull chicks.

Spotted the proud mother tufted duck with her ducklings, going along in a train formation too :-O

No sign of the redstarts reported though...

Did we have any nice weather in May? ;)

Is the bird below a normal or lesser whitethroat? It was sunbathing momentarily at the feeding station at the Flashes.

Went to Marsh Lane yesterday afternoon to have a long awaited go at some macro photography (I've got a 100 lens attached to my old camera).

Some of the things I found out pretty quickly were that butterflies and dragonflies take an age to land, large dragonflies never ever land and it's very hard to get all your subject in focus.

I found loads of butterflies but they were all Gatekeepers and only one type or Dragonfly that was willing to pose.Annoyingly when I got to the causeway there was a family of Reed Warblers who for once were showing well so I had to shoot them with a macro lens.

Three Lesser Whitethroats at the Flashes this morning 8.30am showing amazingly well and giving me a much needed year tick - thought I was dipping them this year!

Also Greenshank still present, 3 Black Tailed Godwits, 3-4 Common Sandpipers, at least 7 Green Sandpiper, 2 Snipe, 2 LRP, juv Willow Warbler, the Little Owl again distantly and lots of Linnets and Goldfinch.

Where exactly were the Lesser Whitethroats, Kay - I know my Dad will be keen to tick them for the year too!

Look out of the window on the very right hand side of the Flashes hide, in the tall hedgerows there on the right. Get there early as we didn't see them again after 8.30am :t:
