Decided to go to Draycote this morning but first I popped over to Shustoke to see if the Black-necked Grebe was still there.

Steve Seal was in the carpark and told me where to go but I soon met another birder who said he could not find it and it may have gone.I waited a while but it wasn't spotted so I left.I believe it was see sometime later ?

Nothing much of note at Draycote but it was quite pleasant to walk round.Bob Nixon told me where he had seen a juvenile Wheatear so after lunch I tried to find it.I think I did but am not sure. What do you think?

Max.

Great day out today - kidnapped Kay ;) for the day, and popped over to UW Flashes first, though at first, the monsoon-like conditions didn't look favourable. Got there, and the sun came out. Ended the day with 3rd degree sunburn!

At UW got some good views of a godwit and the green / common sandpipers, plus some sedge and reed warblers.

Then over to Shustoke where we met Dean first, then Steve and later Jeff arrived. A crowd! After a while, the grebe came over for some half decent shots, and showed that despite its tender age, it was an accomplished fisher.

After that, we tried for the "wood piper" as I decided to call it, which we briefly saw at the pool at Alvecote, but it took flight, and we failed to spot it after.

A long, but enjoyable day - I expect Kay's blog will be more detailed than my quick report here.

Pics to follow... tomorrow, as pubs and ale await me later! B :)

Had a good laugh at the Grebe today, meet some good friends and had a good chat. The bird showed well at times in between the clouds and the dog walkers, all in all not a bad day, thanks to everybody who came.;)
Anybody know who these belong to ?????

Firstly big thanks to Pete for giving me a lift out today :t:

We had a great day taking in Upton Warren Flashes this morning; where we saw 1 Greenshank, 1 Black Tailed Godwit, 2 Common and 9 Green Sandpiper, 1 Dunlin, 2 Little Ringed Plovers, 1 Snipe, 1 Curlew, Sedge and Reed Warblers, tons of Goldfinch and a Peregrine.

Then over to Shustoke for the Black Necked Grebe (only my second time seeing this bird and first time in juv plumage). Enjoyed watching the bird and also enjoyed the company of everyone there today...nice to see you guys :king:

Pete and I then went to Alvecote Pool to see the Wood Sandpiper, but we only got a very brief view before it disapppeared and we couldn't refind. Oh well at least we didn't dip it completely :gh:

Hi all,

Nice to come across you all at Shustoke this morning watching the Black Neck Grebe in juv plumage. It was great to see that Kay had been abducted for the day and I have now seen Pete without his hat on!!

My mum Ann was with me today. Her first twitch at the age of 69!!

Nice to meet you Steve and put a face to a name. Did you manage any pics?

I have seen the tripod photo and I can definately say that kay did look through my scope and was behind my tripod at one point. I can definately say its not Kate or me or even Pete for that matter.

Good views of the Grebe and a good number of the more common Great Crested Grebe on there. I have never seen so many pairs concentrated into one area. I am sure Steve said he had counted 67 on Friday.

Also went to Brandon Marsh mostly Butterfly and dragon/damselfly watching with a few birds thrown in. Very few waders there at present. Got good views of Hobby perched and hunting. Managed a few photo's which I will put in my gallery tomorrow.

Anyway great to meet you all

Did you see any Tree Sparrows Dean? I forgot to mention that I saw one by the Sailing Club on my way back round.
