Hi

Could you tell us where abouts in the Wyre Forrest is best to head for, got next week off and sounds a great place to go for the day.

Cheers

Tim.

Arrrgh, I wasn't driving so didn't take much notice of where we parked - I think it was Dry mill Lane ... AnywayFrom there you can do a circular walk that goes down along side the river and back along the old railway track ) thats where we had the Hawfinch, Tree Pipit & Wood Warbler)

It's only Rock and Roller but I like it
Had a Red Kite drifting east being mobbed by two corvids along Kineton Lane between Hockley Heath and Illshaw Heath at 4:55-5:00pm today.

The reserve technically is not open to the public yet, I am led to believe it will be soon, straying onto the reserve you are likely to asked to show your permit by an RSPB member of staff, however it is all viewable in places from the canal that runs along side the pits. Check out the RSPB website for more details.

The RSPB's new name for the pits is Middleton Lakes which also includes Fishers Mill Pits, the reserve is in Staffs and Warks.
There is a thread on the Staffs section of this forum where you can find more information.

The reserve opens midway through this month i think, the 16th rings a bell, although there are usually RSPB volunteers around on the weekend, maybe in the week too now so close to opening time,i've always found them happy to help with info, the entrance in through Middleton Hall near the Belfry golf club.

Anybody hear of an escapee ? whilst travelling to work this morning i saw a pinkish bird from a distance flying towards the pool which is near the water tower in Bedworth it flew across the A444 whilst i was heading towards Nuneaton,
Kind regards,
Nigel
sorry i couldnt be more specific but it happened so fast and from a distance it looked about the size of a woodie or maybe a small gull but i wouldnt put money on it the first thing that came to mind was flamingo however i dont think it was that big and i didnt see any trailing legs.

RSPB Middelton lakes is due to open this Saturday14th May.
For anyone unfamiliar to this area I have produced a self printed 27 page guide RSPB Middleton lakes and the mid-Tame valley.
The main focus being RSPB Middleton lakes, ways to access the reserve, birds and other fauna and flora to be seen. How to record them correctly at this 2 County Reserve.
Also other Reserves and notable bird sites in the mid-Tame Valley.
To purchase a copy price £3.50 obtainable from the Middleton Hall, The courtyard coffee shop 10a.m-5 p.m 7 days (close to the RSPB Free carpark)
Or place an order by post £3.50 + 85p P&P, from myself
[email protected]
The official access to the reserve is off Bodymoor Heath lane by the Aston Villa training ground opposite Primrose Cotage SP19205 96661. Middleton Hall access is a private road for business with the Middleton Hall and the craft centre.

Ridgehill Wood Kingwinford, today ( Cali woods to the locals ) at least one male Brambling feeding on Beech Mast, with a large flock of Chaffinches at the Ridgehill Cottage entrance to the wood.
With all the Beech trees in this wood i have always thought that it was an ideal place for Bramblint, but this is the first time i have spotted one there.
Considering the small size, fragmentation and urban location of this wood, it offers decent birding. Nuthatch, Treecreeper, Stock Dove, Greater Spotted and Green Woodpeckers are seen on almost every short visit. With the Horse field that run parallel to it you cant help thinking this is a location where something special could turn up.

If anyone knows anything about the reports of eight White-fronted Geese and a Knot at Sandwell Valley on 23rd November, plese reply or send details to me at [email protected] as both species are county rarities.

Thank you.

Kevin

Sadly, no details have been received. Without descriptions the records cannot be acceptable.

Similarly, can anyone provide further details of a Great White Egret flying over Withymoor Village this morning?

Thank you.

Kevin,

It was Paul Legge who saw the GWE. I'll ask him to forward a description to you.

Out of interest, how many of the more notable bird records from Sandwell Valley are formally submitted? I seem to remember a recent belated report of an Eider there as well.......

Brian
