Struggling with this one - here are some photos and a recording of its song.

December 25, 2019 (Merry Christmas!). Location is Little Grove (near Albany), Western Australia.

Thanks for any suggestions!
Dan

Hi Dan.... I was in Little Grove last month!!! Lovely place isn't it.

That's a Golden Whistler song and I think you must have the female there. There were loads of them about but I found it extremely difficult to get a picture of them!!!

Can we use your recording for The Opus, please, I got some on my phone, but don't know what to do with them LOL

Just to be clear, the bird in the photos is the same individual as recorded. Audio was extracted from a video, which could be provided if desired. So, if a whistler (which seems to be on the right track), it would be a case of female song (?). No sightings of males at this site, so far.

Delia - I've been reading your trip report, and in many ways it reflects my own adventure here Down Under. Arrived in Perth in October, and will be here until end of March. So far have 107 species for WA, 99 lifers. All but the last weeks-worth (17spp) have been by public transport in and around Perth.

You are more than welcome to the audio recording for the Opus, once we figure out what it is.

Hi Dan

Hope you're enjoying my thread?

That definitely is a whistler: have a listen to the recording on Xeno-canto, fourth one down.

The ones in WA seem to be called Western Golden Whistler now by some, so I suppose a split may be possible at some point.

Is it likely you'll be back at Little Grove? Did you find the hide on the beach there?

This is Western Whistler P. occidentalis, cf IOC and Aus Bird Guide, in female plumage which is more distinct from Aus Golden Whistler than is the male in this species, and it was split fairly recently.

Thanks, sicklebill, Larry, and Delia!

Hi Delia - yes, we did find that hide, though everything was pretty far off to see well. We've seen quite a bit in the gardens of the place we are staying.

Yeah... I got confused as the book I had didn't split them. Now I'm home I've got myself up to date! The split seems to have occurred in 2016.

You have to get the tides right there Dan and know the heights too... it seemed to be very complicated, being completely different every day!!!

I've now added your recording to The Opus article, thanks so much. One day I might learn how to extract them from my phone LOL. Got a Whipbird recording on there, plus some that I don't know what they are

We don't have any pictures of the female in the Gallery, wonder if you could upload them at some point. I could upload them from this thread in the meantime.

Apparently, one had to click on the “process” button. |^|

Two more days of travel and a dead computer battery later, I think I have got the photo up.
