During a recent birding trip to Northern Ecuador, I tried for the Western Mountain Coati that has been frequenting San Tadeo Bird Gardens for the past few years. This is an extremely difficult species to see with some serious North American mammal watchers twitching this animal once word got out of it's presence. As I was with non mammal watching birding friends on this trip time to look for this animal was limited and I failed to see it on my one visit to the bird gardens.
The following day, whilst birding at Amagusa Reserve near Mashpi Lodge, 60km north of Mindo, a Western Mountain Coati came boldly walking down the access track and approached the ranger. He laughed, called the animal "Amigo" and began throwing pieces of banana to it. It seems like there is a second regular Western Mountain Coati in Ecuador available to those who may wish to see this species.
