Doing Fair Isle for the first time last week paid off for my bogey bird 'Lancy'. While stood on top of Ward Hill I noticied the Shetland Wildlife Group stood in a circle in an oat crop, for some reason I new they had a Lancy. So when they showed the red flag I must have beat the 2000 Metre record even in wellies. The bird gave stunning views, I had crouched down & the bird came towards me so I pulled out my coolpix (which was set on Macro because I had been photographing Oysterplant) & it came within 6 inches of my wellie & went underneath me. This was the start of any twitchers dream , for three days I didn't stop running with a total of 5 red flags. The same day I had R T Pipit, Pallas's Grasshopper Warbler & a second Lancy & day 2 was Brown Flycatcher & Red-flanked Bluetail. After climbing Ward Hill in the dark to phone in the Brown Fly for 7am it went manic again with Siberian Thrush followed by Arctic Warbler & lots of padders, what a trip, 3 ticks exceded my wildest expectations. Mike.
