Not my favourites... Herring and Lesser Black-backed Gulls in and around the City of Gloucester. There's hundreds of them .... they nest on many City centre buildings and fly 24/7/365 .... Feeding from bits and pieces in roads even around 3am under street lights. On two occasions recently I literally tripped over their fresh out of the nest huge youngsters which not quite fully up to scratch with the way their wings work, stride about the place as though they own it. .... and watch out for their parents nearby in dive bombing mode .... :) Clever, smart and handsome proud birds certainly but, noisy and messy and my cars are apparently always under their to-from early morning and late evening return flight paths...no matter where I park them...... I left my red car under a tall street light for two days recently and on my return it had been 'whitewashed' all over literally. Apparently the street light cluster at the top is a favourite perching and roosting place for several birds for long periods. Booked my car in for a "while you wait MoT test" recently and whilst waiting, a burly young Herring Gull wandered into the test area. Several nests up on the roofs of nearby Industrial Units. The Mot tester told me there's many of them every year .... I can believe him. Could clearly see the heads of sitting birds above the tall building roof lines.... probably six nests on one large unit. No longer can they be called Sea Gulls ~ Land Gulls more apt ~ mind you, as usual man is largely to blame. Huge amounts of edible waste on local rubbish tips feed literally 1000s of these Land Gulls every day. There are swirling clouds of the birds there every day picking at the food scraps. Still, live and let live ..... Keep 'em peeled ...;) The School house in the city centre where I attended in the 1950s now supports rooftop nests and although no longer a school ~ the playground now a local council parking lot ~ such is progress ~ the poor Car Park attendant has been dive bombed frequently by the adult birds ~ he became famous for fifteen minutes when the news item made National TV news....:)
