What other hobbies do birders have? (1 Viewer)

BirdForum, travelling (going on a birding trip to Ecuador in October), fishing, interest in early Americana (native Americans, pioneers, etc.), watching good movies, watching college/professional basketball, watching American football, singing (church choir mostly, also when our family gets together we like to harmonize on some golden oldies), postage stamp collecting (also collect our federal Duck Stamps), gardening (my tomatoes will be getting ripe before to long) and I do have a few firearms although I do not really collect them! And I do not collect old fountain pens!

Bah humbug
I guess that reluctantly I'm going to have to admit that BF is my main 'other' hobby at the moment. Like the creativity, humour, and 'taking part' sides of it. All the others are mainly lapsed or on hold;

Sports, would like to do more, but little opportunity when you have little or no natural talent.
I've always collected; fossils, coins, useless stuff (hoarding in other words), etc.
Camping and walking. Did canoeing 3 times. Don't collect fountain pens (But then I'm British).

Beetles (started as collecting, very quickly moved on to identifying instead. The binocular microscope sadly lies dusty and forgotten . . ). Not musical. Rubbish at languages.

Pretty boring really.

My work is birds, and work commitments mean I miss out on a favourite aspect which I'd love to take up again - viz migging. Haven't done it properly since '04 and get withdrawl symptoms every autumn.
Ok, just have to ask for a translation of "viz migging". Please ?????

Well, I think my username sort of gives it away for me eh! I have several synths, and am a brass player too. Here's one of my compositions... enjoy (or not!!) :)

John the Music Man,

Oh, yes, I enjoyed it enormously! I've got no musical talent, but love to listen. Bravo!

Elkcub has hunting connotations, but backwards it spells "Buckle." I've collected silver buckles for 35 yrs.

More music my good Man, — please.

Lisa.....'Viz mig' is UK birder speak shorthand for visible migration......one of the more incomprehensible jargon words; sad isn't it? (sorry Kev;)) 'Viz migging' is actually deliberatly going out to watch birds on migration. It's a term I've never quite brought myself to use but lots do.

Hi Lisa, Joanne's fairly much nailed it - but not sold it! It's pitching yourself up at a vantage point (usually coastal but if there are known inland routes they work just as well) pre dawn and settling in for several hours of scanning for flocks of birds on the move. A bit like a raptor watchpoint without the smelly ol' raptors really - much more fun to try to suss out tiny brown specks hurrying past... Try it, you'll lurrrrvv it.

(And Joanne, if you don't like saying 'viz mig' you could always used a term coined by one of the old Kent robo-birders - 'miz vig'... or 'miserable vigilance'... just about sums the quiet days up!!)

Senior Moment
Playing guitar - has waned as I got older.
Aircraft spotting - morphed into mainly civil aviation photography but I confess I did collect registrations for two very short periods although it never became an arsey obsession.*
Writing and reading - both connected with bird watching and/or wildlife.
Microsoft Flight Simulator/Age Of Empires II less commonly, GTA Vice City - Hmm! Not good this one but it gives me something to do when I am drinking a bottle of wine/beer. I am not a big fan of TV although I go through phases of watching my old DVD/VT collection.

I have gone through other phases such as gardening (I don't have a large garden at the moment), astronomy, sea fishing and various sports.

* I mentioned to a friend once that so many bird watchers are also into (or have been) aircraft spotting in various guises and he came up with the simple explanation that we are the kind of people that walk around with our heads up rather than looking down all the time. A nice thought.
