Helen,

The thread is not inherently poxy, but is poxy inasmuch as it is a popular thread which I am notified of every day. You 'can't remember exactly how' and I can't exactly see how to turn it off. No offence intended.
To be honest, I was too lazy to go and look how to change the options. Takes a lot more than poxiness to offend me, skin as thick as a rhinos.

btw, did you say what was in your garden...? Oh yes, that's right, you did ;)

A huge day, actually only had about an hour to stand in one spot and try not to get whiplash...

The Chipping Sparrow count got in the 50s before I lost track! A dozen or so White-throated sparrows, 2 Catbirds, a dozen or more Yellow-rumped Warblers plus all of the usual suspects and finally 3 new yard birds. Baltimore Oriole, Blackpoll Warbler, and American Redstart!

Total species count 25. I can not wait until tomorrow morning!

Rose Breasted Grosbeak!

Hello,
I am new here. I am new to back yard birding also. Just started working on my yard the last few weeks and converting into a bird/butterfly habitat. It's coming along nicely. This morning I was sitting on my back porch and feeling a little discouraged because I didn't seem to be attracting anything other than the sparrows and a cardinal couple. I walked away for a moment and came back and there on my feeder was a Rose Breasted Grosbeak! I was so excited. I sat there for the longest time just watching it and memorizing what it looked like. When it finaly flew away I went through my bird book and found it. It was beautiful. I will be excited for the whole day now.

That is the exact bird that got me into birding! It was a dreary April day and my feeders were full of the usual old boring Mourning Doves and House Finches when lo and behold there was a strange bird with red and black and white markings. I looked in my old and simple field guide and saw what it was, Rose-breaste Grosbeak! I am still excited about it, 2 years later.

And welcome to birdforum matmeemom!

Wow! A rose breasted grosbeak! I know how you feel mattmemom. It was very stunning to see the brilliant colors.
Also a white crowned sparrow, which I dont see very often at the feeder.

Nesting at last

For the last two years there has been a male House Sparrow sitting on my pyracantha hedge cherping away from dawn to dusk trying to attract a female with no luck we began to feel very sorry for him because in the area were we live there is no House Sparrows due to the houses being fairly new I put up some new bird boxes on the house wall & on the fence with holes that was a bit larger than the blue tit box I have it said on the labels for Robins etc at the same time as I got the boxes I also got a selection of metal plates that stop woodpeckers making the hole bigger they had different sized holes in them depending on which birds you want to use the box for with all the work we have been doing on the house I never had time to put the metal plates on the boxes I have just come home from work to find to my surprise the male House Sparrow has found a mate & are building a nest in the box on the house wall thats persistence for you, & a tick for my garden nesting birds.

Excellent news, Snapper.

Well, seems like the fledgling dunnock has survived (so far!), saw it today flying after the adult.

Today in my garden ..... a pair of Mallards seem to think it's a nice place to settle into (I haven't even got a pond!) Also a 2 spot Ladybird (first seen this year), the flowering ceanothus sounds like a bee hive ...... and a Bluetit flew in to collect the fur that came off my moulting cat.

Sunny with a fresh north west wind.

really happy today, one of the chaffinches bought two of her little ones along, so cute, both huddled together, then being feeded by their mum. Also had a tree sparrow(first for me), 4 blackbirds, about 15 starlings, they have found the bird bath and will not get out of it, about 5 at a time, so funny, but am changing the water constantly! 4 greenfinches, 2 goldfinches, 1 coal tit, 2 blue tits, 4 great tits, 2 jackdaws, 2 doves, 2 wrens, 1 thrush. Really good to see the garden so busy

Two Tufted Ducks (pair) on the ponds all day today, dont usually see them this time of year and they rarely hang around.

a few Turtle Doves calling, GS Woodpecker, 3 Blackcaps, not much else of interest.

Working in the house and keeping an eye on the feeders and bird table is never easy - I'm always tempted to train my bins on the birds rather than my eyes on my work! Anyway, today's list of garden visitors and sightings are:

Magpie, Great Tit, Redstart (female), Goldfinch, House Sparrow, Swift, Blackbird, Wood Pigeon, Collared Dove, Starling, Greenfinch, Barn Swallow, Chaffinch, Jackdaw, Moorhen (pair with six chicks on the millstream at the bottom of our garden - a new tick for the garden list!) I'm fairly certain that I also saw a Pied Flycatcher but it flew off before I could confirm identification.

There's still plenty of daylight left, so it's back to the bins and and birds!

well would you belive it!

about three weeks ago a male bullfinch popped into garden to pick over the emerging apple blossom , thrilled as i was to witness the third vist (that i,ve seen) in four years . i held my breath as he took more than a passing interest in the sunflower feeder . well the following day he brought his girlfriend , egar to show off his new found food source. a week later they were competing with ANOTHER pair of bullfinches for perches at the feeder . the females must both be sitting on clutches as only the males show now . it makes opening the curtains in the early morning a real treat , as their both there battling it out with the green finch and spadgers every day .what a delight , for me it's the crowning glory on four years of feeding and gardening with wildlife in mind.

Blackbird eggs must have hatched male & female adults back & forth in the rain with food looks like an extra batch of meal worms this weekend to help them out a little.

Regards Snapper.

Only a few weeks into working on changing my yard into a place birds want to come and I am seeing results. Slow, but results. I am sure my back yard sightings are nothing compared to most of you here, but to me they are exciting. Yesterday I had the rose breasted grosbeak in addition to my daily house sparrows, mourning doves and a male and female cardinal. They come daily. Now the latest newcomers are a red bellied woodpecker and a tufted titmouse. I have just started planting native plants and putting up feeders and a bird bath. To have new arrivals in a few short days is encouraging and exciting.

For the past couple of days in my yard I've been seeing a yellow bird that has me torn between a Yellow Warbler and a Yellow-throated Vireo. The head looks that of the warbler and the rest of the body like the vireo. Any help is appreciated!
