This may not be exciting to anyone else but after having my feeders up for about a week and a half I got my first birds today, a Black Capped Chickadee and two House Finches. Just changed the feed 2 days ago from black oil to a mixture of black oil, cracked corn, millet, and safflower. Seemed to do the trick.

had 8 Goldfinch today, several singing their heads off, getting through a lot of Nyjer seed due to them being such messy eaters.

4 Hawfinch first thing, 2 Sparrowhawks, probably the resident pair but rarely see them together, G S Woodpecker and several very large mixed Tit flocks, dont think I've ever seen so many LT Tits.

The highlight today was the Brambling, the third seen this winter and the first for the year, followed by a Hawfinch and a Great Spotted Woodpecker. The most common birds in my garden are Great Tits closely followed by Goldfinches, Greenfinches, Siskins, Chaffinches, Blue Tits, House Sparrows and Blackbirds. Fewer in number but usually present are Collared Doves, Hedge Accentors, a Robin, Wood Pigeons, Starlings, a Nuthatch or two and Magpies and Jackdaws. Bullfinches, Marsh Tits, Long-tailed Tits and Jays drop in from time to time.

Yesterday, after a snow, I had a pretty good day, with 14 species of birds and one mammal visiting the feeders. Here’s my list: mourning doves, dark-eyed juncos, song sparrow, white-throated sparrows, Northern cardinals, tufted titmice, downy woodpecker, white-breasted nuthatches, black-capped chickadees, yellow-rumped warbler, carolina wren, house finches, house sparrows, blue jays, grey squirrels. Brown creepers and red-bellied woodpeckers stayed away--maybe they didn't care for the crowds.

My garden is getting a little busier this week after a quiet spell, today in my garden; Blackbirds, Greenfinches, Dunnocks, Sparrows, Robin, C.Doves, W.Pigeons, Starlings, House sparrows, Great tits, Blue Tits, Coal tit, and a Wren who was busily flitting in and around the hanging baskets on my apple tree. Has any else noticed the Tits checking out nest boxes, and they seem to be pairing aswell. Dunnocks are also very active !

Spring not too far away now :D

I had trouble with the birds feeding in my garden, and found that the sunflower hearts in a feeder on their own soon had the birds calling to feed, So I use small bird food seeds such as finch food, peanuts on their own not many on the bird table and some sunflower seeds. I put the nuts and sunflowers in feeders a little way from the table, infact outside my back door. My husband cemented a tree trunk, about 3 foot tall into a bucket, to which we added some hooks and hang our feeders and fat balls from this, they seem to like this. I live on an estate and although I have fields behind me my garden is only about 35ft long by 25 wide, I do have a pond which they seem to like to land on the plants for water.

I never have much time to check what's happening in my garden at this time of year as it's too dark and by the time I return from work it's dark again. At least I have the weekends though. Having said that, just before I left for work this morning I happened to glance out the window to the garden and apart from the usual sparrows, blackbirds and starlings were one occasional visitor to my garden; A Song Thrush, plus one extremely rare visitor to my garden; A Bullfinch (only the 3rd time in 5 years), and one first time ever visitor; A Blackcap .. not only was it the first time I'd seen a Blackcap in the garden it was actually the first time I've seen one at all! 99% of my birdwatching is done within a 10 mile radius of my home and I have until today never seen a blackcap around here.

Strewth! Following on from Monday's Brambling - a goldcrest briefly this morning. A great week! (But I must remember to carry the camera whilst hanging out the washing in future!)

First time I have seen siskin in the garden - one lone bird yesterday and back again today. Goldfinch (just one as well) back after a month's absence. My sympathies about the heron - we had major problems last year - very upset when he stabbed our 6 year old golden orfe (one of the original fish in our pond). It floated around upside down for a couple of days - we tried to medicate it and we hoped that it would survive, but it didn't. The heron took plenty of other fish as well - all the big goldfish. Eventually we got a product which was on e-bay and which is quite discrete in comparison to most pond protection - the heron stopped visiting the pond after that - it had been really cheeky before then and would sit on the roof, trees and pondside and would hardly even move when we went out to shoo it away.

Get to be at home today to watch the feeder a little bit. Had cardinals, sparrows, finches and squirrels. Haven't seen the bluejays for a while and hoping that they are still around.
