This is a wonderful thread. I can relate to some of the stories. I spent time in Egypt and Israel with the RCAF and can only recall one bird, a Hoopoe. Sad! I can think of three heart stopping moments, moments that are still so clear to me just as if they happened yesterday. I will never forget the sight of my first White-tailed Deer. I was new in this country, still fresh from London. I had never seen a wild deer (or much else wild). It was the summer holidays and I didn't have any friends yet so I went for a solitary walk. A gorgeous doe walked out in to the middle of the road in front of me. We both stood and stared at each other. I couldn't believe my eyes. I was so excited I could hardly breath. The doe turned and walked quietly back into the woods. I think that's when my love affair with the wild began. Moment number two took place many years later and many miles away from the first moment. We were moving from Ottawa to the Queen Charlotte Islands. We towed a trailer (caravan) across the country to Prince Rupert, BC where we were to take the ferry out to the Charlottes. In Prince Rupert we were told that if we wanted to be sure to get on the boat we had better be near the front of the line up. We didn't want to wait several days for the next boat so we decide to get in line immediately even though the boat wouldn't leave until the next day. The line up for the boat lay at the bottom of a cliff that was probably about 100' high. As we hung around the trailer killing time I had a noise from above. My first thought was that I was hearing a baby. I looked up and there were two adult Bald Eagles sitting in trees at the top of the cliff. My first eagles. Wow! I've seen many hundreds since and they always give me thrill but those first ones were and are so special to me. This post is getting too long so I'll post no. 3 separately.
