Whimbrel & food item (California) (1 Viewer)

While visiting California (November) I photographed 2-3 Whimbrel feeding on the shoreline. I would appreciate clarification if these are the Hudsonian sub species Numenius phaeopus hudsonicus and secondly what the food item might be.
I tentatively think it might be a small Horse shoe crab Limulus polyphemus but would appreciate confirmation (or otherwise).

Many Thanks
