I would also say Tufted duck x Common Pochard. The contrast between flank feathers and scapulars /back is much too strong for a hybrid with scaup in my opinion. I know only a male hybrid Pochard x scaup, but that one (shown in one of the Gillham books on hybrid ducks) has nearly no contrast between mantle/ scapulars and the flanks, in eclipse plumage as well as in breeding plumage. White at the base of the bill is common in pochard x Tufted duck female hybrids, and that can be quite a lot, similar to Scaup. see some examples of the cross pochard x tufted duck here: http://www.birdinggermany.de/tafelentenhybrid.htm http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-67THd9MkzFg/UU21EjTRFaI/AAAAAAAAGlY/Slw4QCmTydQ/s1600/Hybrid+duck+1a.jpg http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-58HAgduRhA4/UQQUAvRabzI/AAAAAAAAFuA/V0gr1W6n5Ok/s1600/Scaup+hybrid+no+2+2013+1a.jpg https://www.flickr.com/photos/14195020@N08/2067923491/ https://www.flickr.com/photos/15902434@N02/2073484021/ Additionally the initial bird in this thread has a black tipped bill with the black running very much back towards the base of the bill. reminding me of pochard and of pochard x tufted duck hybrids . I would expect less black on teh bill tip in a hybrid with scaup-- but I haven´t yet seen a proven female-type hybrid of this cross, I do not know that for sure.
